I enjoyed Will Smith’s I Am Legend, I really, really did. It was a great movie, even if it did stray quite far from its source material, and only served to reinforce my belief that Will Smith really is an outstanding actor (as long as you ignore his Fresh Prince days).
Unfortunately, this movie is also the cause of a long running argument that I have with almost everyone I know that too has seen this movie. It is an argument that pits me against everyone else and with the end result that all are in agreement that I simply ‘see things’, things that are simply not there.
Well boys and girls, it is time to put this puppy to rest.
The argument in question revolves around the final action sequence as the Dark Seekers are about to break through the plexiglass protecting Will and his companions down in the lab. Now, I watched the movie in the cinema and as the final credits rolled, I loudly proclaimed what a brilliant move it had been to include the all important butterfly imagery in the cracking glass which then led to Will’s final conviction and his resulting actions. Of course, no one else had seen this piece of brilliance, and it snowballed from there, my word against that of the world.
Well, sorry to disappoint, but this is how it is: the Dark Seeker slams the glass and then steps back. The music alters pace, moving to a more surreal, slowed down tempo. The camera pulls back and you see a large butterfly outline on the cracked window. This plays back the all important phrase about “follow the butterfly” in Will’s mind, who then looks down to see the butterfly on his companion’s neck which in turn leads to his final actions.
If you didn’t see the glass butterfly, you will still get the bigger picture thanks to the phrase and the tattoo, but if like me, you saw the glass outline, then you will understand why he recalls that phrase in the first place. Of course, it is at this point that all my naysayers step in and say that I am talking absolute rubbish of course, which is where I say look below.
After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, isn’t it?

I would just like to take this moment to proclaim in a very loud voice: “See, I told you so!”. Aah, truly nothing smells quite so sweet as utter vindication in the morning! :)
