The 1995 Rugby World Cup Movie: Pointless? General Nonsense 02 APR 2009

Francois Pienaar Nelson MandelaI don’t get it. Yes, the 1995 Rugby World Cup victory is a treasured moment in South African sporting, if not national history, but who else actually cares? I say this because I simply can’t see the target audience outside of South Africans for this big budget Hollywood movie that is currently being filmed here on our local shores, starring Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar and Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela.

And bear in mind that this is a Hollywood movie, not a locally produced one like the Hansie movie, that sure enough, kind of flopped. Not even the local, intended audience supported it well enough for it to make a lasting impression on the South African film landscape – though that said, I’m sure there are a number of people who like me, still view that sod as an absolute traitor to our nation. Mistake or no mistake, what Mr. Hansie Cronje did was quite unforgivable in my opinion.

Anyway, back to the rugby movie. Surely this is like holding up a rubber chicken to the American audience and demand that they like it because it’s got a colourful beak? Do the European’s care enough to watch it? Do New Zealand want to relive their shame? I’m intrigued, that’s all I’ll say.

Honestly, just how did the pitch for this one make it through the studio execs?

Oh, but at least it does give Kelsey’s boyfriend his 15 minutes of fame. He’s been cast as one of the New Zealand players, so that’s pretty awesome! Oh and apparently Matt Damon and the rest of the boys are a pretty cool bunch to work worth – even if teaching them rugby from scratch is a bit of a task!

Oh, almost forget to mention. Given all I’ve said above, I am looking forward to watching it when it finally gets released. It really is one of our proudest moments! :)

Wait a minute, now that I’ve got Internet again today and can do some actual research, chances are the film may actually be more about Nelson Mandela than anything else. Oops. But I’ve already written this and am simply not going to toss my work away. Way too much stress in moving the office and trying to deal with Telkom’s nationwide ADSL blackout yesterday! :)
