Life-size Gundam Statue for Odaiba Island Anime 17 JUN 2009

Giant Gundam Statue on Odaiba IslandThe insanely popular Mobile Suit Gundam space war anime franchise is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and what better way to pay homage to this anime giant than construct a colossal 18-meter-tall Gundam Mobile Suit?

Set to open pubically on July 11, this giant robot is built with fiberglass-reinforced plastic over a steel frame (for easy disassembly later), features a moving head unit, 50 lights and mist-emitting devices located over 14 points spread around its body. The structure is being erected on Tokyo’s artificial Odaiba island and as you can see from the visitor-posted videos below, so far head movements, sound-effects and mist generation all appear to be in working condition.

Needless to say, just how awesome is this bit of fanboy indulgence!? :)
