Marvel’s more mature-centered, direct-to-DVD animated movies are proving to be quite a treat and thankfully DC haven’t been left far behind, pretty natural when you consider that they’ve long been the kings of animated kiddies’ fare with some awesome offerings like the Batman and Superman animated universes, Teen Titans, Legion of Super Heroes and Justice League franchises just to name a few. They kicked off their more mature animated features line with Superman: Doomsday back in 2007 and have since followed it up with Justice League: The New Frontier, Batman: Gotham Knight, and most recently Wonder Woman, released earlier this year.
So what’s next on the list then?
Well they’re going straight for another big gun, one of the longest-serving and more popular super heroes from the rather extensive DC hero vault, a man none other than Hal Jordan, the original Earth Green Lantern!
But hold on a ‘sec I hear you say. Didn’t DC already cover Hal Jordan’s origin story rather nicely in the recent Justice League: The New Frontier film? Well yes, yes they did. Which is exactly why award-winning, veteran DC writer Alan Burnett is penning a plot revolving around the inexperienced Hal’s first ever mission as a newly elected Green Lantern guardian, and naturally, with a man such as Alan firmly behind the script-writing duties, I can only hold my breath in anticipation because I KNOW it’s going to be good!
Besides, from what has been leaked so far, Green Lantern: First Flight is shaping up to be pretty damn awesome, both on the animation and the writing fronts. So look forward to it, it’s heading our way come the 28th of July, 2009!
