The first television anime series for Strike Witches was released back in 2008 and surprised everyone by gaining immense popularity rather quickly and rather vigorously. Why? Well apart from the unusual yet strangely satisfying mishmash of genres that make up the story of Strike Witches, it also gained a lot of followers for its unusual stance on pants – or rather lack of pants – for its all female crew of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing.
And then of course there was the fact that the story does revolve around what is essentially girls who are technically moe anthropomorphisms of classic military planes.
Strike Witches was originally created by Humikane Shimada and the anime series was helmed by Kazuhiro Takamura, with Gonzo providing the animation.
As for the story, well it goes a little something like this:
Earth has been ravaged by the unstoppable Neuroi. Whole land masses have been obliterated and what it is left of the world is huddled together in a desperate defence against these unknown, alien attackers. Mankind’s only real weapon against the Neuroi turns out to be a mixture of technology and magic, given form in the Striker Units, mechanical legs that when worn by magic-wielding girls, deliver the power of flight and strength to its wearer. Armed with heavy artillery that no ordinary man can carry and protected against the Neuroi’s devastating corrosive miasma, these flying, fighting young girls form the front-line of Earth’s defence force. They are the Strike Witches.
Yoshika Miyafuji is a young girl talented in healing magic but who also refuses to join the battle against the Neuroi. However, a letter received from her father long thought dead changes things and she soon finds herself embroiled in the life of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing.
