How to Force a Unity Reload if it Hangs or Stops Responding Software & Sites 30 MAR 2012

Unity is growing on me as an interface, but unfortunately for me who doesn’t exactly run high end equipment here at home, it’s a pretty sluggish beast on my home PCs and prone to hanging or disappearing every now and then. Luckily there is an easy enough way to reload or restart it, depending of course to what level it is currently experiencing problems.

Anyway, the easiest way to achieve this is to run the following command, either through the Unity run command interface (Alt + F2) or through a terminal(Alt + Ctrl + T). Simply enter and run:

unity --replace

Now watch with your mouth hanging open as everything disappears and then begins to redraw itself again. Nifty.
