The original Million Dollar Challenge was formulated by Gary Player and Sun International founder Sol Kerzner way back in 1981 to beat sporting isolation and bring the world’s top golfers to the homeland of Bophuthatswana – the only chance South Africans would have to see them play live.
With its million-dollar prize pool, it was also the most lucrative tournament in the world.
Of course, a lot has changed since then, and the Nedbank Golf Challenge as it is now known even managed to officially join both the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour in 2013, meaning that monies won counts towards those tour money lists. In fact the playing field even increased from the traditional 12 all the way up to 30 golfers!
The leading 10 players from the top 30 on the Race to Dubai and the FedExCup will be eligible, along with the winners of the Asian Tour, Japan Golf Tour and Australasian Tour money lists. Players also can qualify through the South African Open and Alfred Dunhill Championship in the weeks before the Nedbank Golf Challenge.
That of course happens later in December this year, but if you want to catch something a little sooner, then there is always the Nedbank Golf Challenge Amateur Series taking place in July on the very same Gary Player Golf Course.
The new revamped Amateur Series will see a combined field of A & B division players compete in their respective divisions to take home the replica trophy and coveted title. The competition is also open to both senior and female golfers.
In addition, the winner in each division will win tickets to the tournament and 2 nights’ accommodation. Thomas Bjorn, 2013 winner of the Nedbank Golf Challenge, will present the winner with the trophy at this year’s 2014 Nedbank Golf Challenge.
