Carpet Census Bin

Nice post title because it just rolls off the tongue when you say it out aloud, but actually it refers to three completely unrelated points that I’ve just happened to bundle all together because they all take place on the same day.

So let’s start with the carpet then shall we?

After noticing that Jessica is quite willing to stay on her tummy and flail around for longer the harder the surface she finds herself on, we yanked away all the protective cushioning and now let her roll around directly on the lounge carpet. Works pretty well except for the teeny weeny problem that our carpet is dirty. Very, very dirty.

It’s partly the cats fault, partly my disinterest in properly cleaning the bottom of my feet, and mostly because we only really yank the vacuum cleaner out every second month (if that), meaning that in addition to increasing Jessie’s tummy time, her immune system was probably also getting a good boost thanks to all the nasties down there.

Needless to say, we had to rectify the situation, and so we called upon Monty and Cheryl to come through for supper – and just maybe lug their fantastic Kirby vacuum cleaner along with them! ;)

Thankfully they accepted, and in amongst all the wine, tuna wraps, and ice-cream with strawberries, the Kirby proved yet again why it is by far the ultimate carpet cleaning machine! (Seriously, it looks like a brand new carpet, and achieving that with our carpet is an achievement to say the least!)

Anyway, at the same time, we also got added to the official SA stats, courtesy of Census 2011, with the arrival of a designated census worker outside my front gate during the afternoon. Being a little busy with work, I opted to take the form from her and fill it out on my own time before handing it back to her in the evening. So I dutifully did this, in pencil, and must congratulate her on having given me the correct estimate when I asked her how long I could expect this to take – she said 30 minutes and I did it in 30 minutes. (Shamefully, it would seem that everyone else that has done this, has done it in a far shorter period of time, so I’ll just put this done to being more dutiful than the rest then.)

On handing over the census back to the lady in the evening, Chantelle noticed that our black wheelie refuse bin hadn’t been returned yet, and after a cursory scan and chat to the complex maintenance guy, we were forced to assume that it had been pilfered from the herd. So off to the police station for a case number and a phone call to the municipality – 14 days to get a replacement one delivered, and at no cost to us, which is particularly nice to hear. Oh, and for now the rubbish placed in black bags will suffice for collection.

And with that, I have neatly concluded my Tuesday of Carpet Census Bin story, don’t you think?

Jessica and Her Big Orange Hopping Ball

One of the things to come out of Baby Gym is just how good an exercise it is for your baby to be perched on top of a big bouncy ball and then being made to bounce – it activates and stimulates their sense of balance as well as speed of recovery, and combining it with some other exercises like rolling them side to side or over the top on both their tummy and back, really does turn the simple hopping ball into an essential home gym accessory!

Finding one at a toy shop however isn’t quite as easy as you might think, especially when the balls come packed in boxes which aren’t spherical in shape at all, never mind the staff that don’t quite understand what you are trying to mime to them when inquiring about bouncy balls in the first place. Nevertheless, I persevered and was eventually rewarded with a bright orange Winnie the Pooh hopping ball from Toys R Us in Bellville, along with this really cool green elephant plush toy that laughs when you pull on its cord! (Truth be told, I was more excited about the elephant than the ball. So was Ryan. Jessica on the other hand couldn’t care less about the elephant as it turns out).

I must admit to being a little bit stumped when I extracted the deflated stretchy balloon from its box, struggling to figure out just how in the world one was meant to inflate this giant monstrosity. Unfortunately for me, it would seem that I’m the only one who doesn’t know about these cool removable plug systems, as Ryan and Chantelle were quick to point out how dumb I was being in terms of struggling to get this thing inflated.

As it turned out, Chantelle did most of the donkey work.

Still, it was all worth it, because Jessie can’t seem to get enough of the bright orange chew toy which Daddy occasionally throws her on and then makes her bring up her lunch with some vigorous hops…

Finally a Break in the Disturbed Sleeping Patterns

At last, a break in Jessica’s rather disturbed sleeping patterns which have plagued us over the last month or so! The last couple of evenings have been bliss for a change, with Jessica giving us no problems in terms of going to bed, and even more importantly, not waking up during the middle of the evening and getting Mommy out of bed in the process!

The last couple of weeks could have been caused by anything, but most likely it was a combination of her continuous ear infections coupled with the fever that goes with it, as well as her top front teeth that are steadily making their way out, leaving Jessica looking like she’s wearing a permanent upper mouth guard!

Anyway, for now she seems back to her old self again, so hopefully the medicine is doing its job and the teeth are giving her a little break. Still, there’s plenty of teeth still to come, and I suppose the children at the day care aren’t getting any healthier…

That said, at least the whole household is healthy again for a change, with both Chantelle and I also having finally shaken whatever it was that was plaguing us.

Now just to hold thumbs that Tristan at work hasn’t gone and passed on his H1N1 virus over to me…

The Bambino Roadster Car Seat

Chantelle and I have been on a bit of a buying spree in terms of Jessica as of late, having in quick succession bought her a brilliant Bambino Roadster car and booster seat as well as a too cute for words Chariot feeding chair system, much to the horror of our bank account balances of course! :)

(Never mind the ultra cute duck-laden non slip rubber bath mat thing, with squishy bath toys, now that Miss Dribble Monster baths in the big bath!)

Of course, this is what I should have written well over a month ago when we first bought all of this stuff, but seeing as I have been a bit slack on the life and Jessica blog posts as of late, I’m only picking up on this one now!

With Jessica fast outgrowing the little baby seat that comes as part of the pram, we needed to invest in a proper car seat for her, and as such we set out to the mall, targeting in particular both Toys R Us and Baby Boom. I didn’t realize the variance in terms of what is being offered in the car seat range, but it quickly became apparent that you get what you pay for, and so we both decided on the Bambino Roadster chair from Baby Boom, a middle of the range car seat ringing in at R1,500.

The nice thing about this one, apart from the fact that it appears to be quite rugged, very adjustable and rather padded, is that it can be used for group classifications 0+,I,II and III, bearing a weight from 0 to 36 kg – in other words this is a car seat that can last us for a number of years! Another bonus is it comes with a base that turns it into a rear facing seat for Group 0+, perfect for us at the moment with little Jessica who still hasn’t quite hit the weight mark which allows her to be forward facing in a normal car seat.

(And on top of all this, I even happen to like the design!)

Installing the seat is a little tricky and so it is best to keep the manual close at hand when attempting this, though we did run into quite a major obstacle when installing it in Chantelle’s Hyundai Getz – our seat belts are too short to do the necessary wraparounds properly!! Nevertheless, we have jury-rigged it to an extent that it will work for now until we can flip it around to be forward facing, though it does mean Chantelle can’t have any front passengers sitting next to her when she drives!

In any event, Jessica fits snugly in the chair, sits quite comfortably, and is seeming to enjoy the view offered by the higher seating position.

As for the pram’s baby chair, well that now inhabits my car for when I need to take Jessica on short hops, like to day care for instance.

So yeah, I’m pretty happy with the purchase we made and will definitely recommend the Bambino Roadster to any parent concerned with the safety of their baby whilst travelling – it’s well built, quite flexible in terms of use, looks good, well padded and comes in at a fair price when ignoring the bottom of the range stuff.

Nifty.

Mixing Flavours for the First Time

Jessica isn’t a fussy eater at all, which is pretty cool, because it means that Mommy can experiment with a wide variety of foods, flavours and textures.

The latest attempt is to take double cream unflavoured Greek yoghurt and mix in some mashed up kiwi fruit and banana. Needless to say, hilarity ensued! :)

(P.S. She did actually finish the whole bowl once she got used to the taste, just in case you were wondering!)

One of the more fun aspects of having a baby in your life is the hilarious faces that they can pull. Like when you mix yoghurt with an unexpected flavour…
