Jessica is back at Last!! (Oh, and a Weekend Report)

Yay, finally Jessica is back with us, and everything is back to normal, routine and all! :)

With creché opening on Monday, this was the last week of Jessica staying with Oupa and Ouma, and to be honest, it was becoming quite tough without my little one back home with me, so by the end of the week I was seriously looking forward to finally reclaiming my daughter. However, before that, Chantelle wanted us to enjoy one last date night before the routine was back in full swing, meaning that Friday evening was spent at Somerset Mall, where we enjoyed a quiet dinner in one another’s company at the Spur, before moving on to watch the thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable Sherlock Holmes 2: Game of Shadows.

Seeing as I am currently dragging Chantelle off on hour long walks as of late, Saturday morning unsurprisingly kicked off with yet another of our treks to the beach and back, though this one had a slight interruption as we came across a beach blockaded with bicycles and people in wetsuits – this year’s big Totalsports Terra Firma multi-discipline event thingie was in full swing in Gordon’s Bay of all places!

As a further surprise, we bumped into both my now ex-colleague David Fox (who was partaking in the event) and my ex-karate training partner James Wayne (who wasn’t partaking, but was there for the photo opportunities). After losing a bit of time in catching up with everyone, Chantelle and I then had to dash back to the house, where we had just enough time for a quick shower and change of clothes before leaping into our cars and racing off to Joostenbergvlaktes along the N1, to meet up with both sets of grandparents, plus one Jessie, for breakfast at the always pleasant Bamboo Gardens restaurant, situated in the heart of the awesome Cape Garden Centre.

The Cape Garden Centre is pretty spectacular for a nursery!

Breakfast was a leisurely but delicious affair, and Jessie enjoyed the after entertainment, as we let her touch a bunny rabbit, play with a Jack Russell puppy, and stare at a mean tempered Shetland pony on our way out.

From there it was a return down the N1 to the Montgomery Clan Stronghold, where we set about getting the debriefing from Ouma and Oupa, and launching into the arduous task of packing all of Jessie’s belongings and accessories back into the two cars, before heading off to the next stop for the day, that being my folk’s pad, where we enjoyed a lovely outdoor lunch and an even lovelier time in the pool, with pretty much the whole family (including Chantelle), getting in on the wet action!

Sunday was a completely different story though, with Chantelle and I opting to spend the day as hermits, enjoying some much needed alone time with just the three of us at home. We did venture out for lunch at Hagglunds, but this was kept pretty short thanks to a combination of sweltering heat and a niggly Jessica. Other than that, it was pretty much a case of unpacking, settling in, and getting everything ready for the about to commence routine.

View from Hagglunds restaurant

So yeah, a mixed weekend of entertainment, family and food, but certainly an enjoyable way to properly cap off the holiday season and now fully rejoin the daily grind, routine and all!

Comic Book Art: Donna Troy by Nemesi-Har-Aralis

Donna Troy has been known to go under the names of Wonder Girl, Darkstar, Troia and just plain Donna Troy, which gives you a good indication that she’s had quite the convoluted comic book history over the years. Regardless of all that, she is probably easiest to remember as being quite similar to Wonder Woman in terms of abilities, i.e. enhanced strength, durability and flight, being an officially recognised Amazonian and all that, just with a whole lot of added cosmic knowledge, or rather, a knowledge of the entire DC multiverse!

This particular Amazon has of course been affliated with a number of groups over the years, including the Teen Titans, Darkstars, Titans of Myth, Challengers from Beyound and the Justice League.

And just in case you were wondering, this engaging, moody and beautiful rendition of Donna courtesy of artist Nemesi-Har-Aralis.

First Impressions… Marvel Anime: X-Men (2011)

Admittedly, I quite enjoyed this entry in the Marvel Anime outing, which in total consists of a 12-part Iron Man, 12-part Wolverine, 12-part X-Men and 12-part Blade (in that order) run. The story is quite engaging, and sees a core X-Men group of Cyclops, Wolverine, Beast and Storm travel to Japan to try and solve an absorbing mystery, one which entails the disappearance of mutants, secondary mutation in mutants, U-Men, the Inner Circle, Emma Frost, and a complete jamming of mutant signatures in the affected area!

As the story unfolds and mysteries revealed, we find that there is even more at play here than originally thought, including a secret from Charles’ past that not even Professor X himself was aware of!

The plot and storytelling is solid, the characters are all faithful to their comic book counterparts, and the clever use of Armor/Hisako Ichiki makes grounding this story in the unfamiliar territory of Japan feel quite valid and thus everything just works.

There’s not much in terms of humour or heavy, heavy drama here, but plenty of pulse quickening action and loads of intrigue and mysteries to be resolved, making for a delightful watch which you can easily lose yourself in as you race through all 12 episodes in what will probably be one sitting!

The animation is particularly strong (no surprises there, it is after all from Madhouse!), featuring some fantastic character designs and detail, plus a host of beautifully rendered backgrounds. The fight sequences are slick, well thought out and co-ordinated, and in the end Marvel Anime: X-Men is simply put, a great looking television show.

Similarly, the music score and voice actors employed are all well suited to the task at hand, leading to a polished final product.

Final verdict? Highly recommended for all anime and X-men fans then! :)

Things I’m not Fond of (and thus hope Jessie doesn’t get into): Tattoos

Before we start, a disclaimer. We are all human beings, meaning that we are entitled to have our own opinions. And just because I have an opinion about something, doesn’t mean that you have to agree with it. Nor do I have to agree with your opinion. However, the most important thing here is that I have to accept that you are entitled to your opinion, as you have to accept that I’m entitled to my opinion. That just how things should work. That said, sadly, this is often not the case…

Anyway, tattoos.

Not a big fan, definitely not a big fan. Blurry, smudgy ink on skin, complete waste of time as far as I’m concerned.

On the topic of men with tattoos, I’ve never seen a tattoo that doesn’t look silly/stupid on a man before. And if you try too hard with your tattoos, then you simply end up looking like a doofus.

Yes, yes, even if you are all hardcore with your martial arts symbol tattooed on your chest, or your Nazi allegiances tattooed across your collar bone, you look like a doofus to me. Such is life. (And don’t start me on how ridiculous tribal designs look tattooed on a man…)

And then there are tattoos on women.

Women are by design meant to be beautiful, and for the most part, they usually are. But tattoos? Tattoos are like smudgy blemishes on your body, definitely not pretty and definitely not desirable. And it doesn’t matter where it is placed, it really is just unattractive to me because it diminishes the natural beauty of the spot it now inhabits.

Oh, but they have meaning attached to them, all spiritual or remembrance like, you shout to me. Really? Nothing you can’t remember yourself? Nothing an annually repeated date in your calendar can’t help you remember? And if it is placed on a spot you can’t see, like your neck or your back or you bum, then what’s the point?

I don’t get it. It’s unattractive, especially as you get older and it gets… less defined.

So yeah, tattoos. I seriously hope that the fad is over by the time Jessica is old enough to maker her own decisions…

Yuppiechef Premium Kitchen Tools is pretty Awesome

Disappointingly, the electronic kitchen scale I had bought for Chantelle for Christmas from Game didn’t work right out of the box. However, as it turned out, this was quite a good thing because a) it didn’t look as nice as it did in the picture on the box, and b) I have now discovered Yuppiechef, probably the most awesome kitchen tools and appliances online store in South Africa, and in all likelihood, the source of all Chantelle’s birthday and Christmas gifts from me in the foreseeable future! :)

Yuppiechef brands themselves as an upmarket supplier of funky and cool, not quite your standard run of the mill kitchen tools and appliances, carrying an extensive list of some truly beautiful and remarkable kitchen items. And although the prices you pay for most of their stock is far higher than what you would pay for a similar type of item in one of the mass retailers like Pick ‘n Pay or Game, the fact of the matter is that most of Yuppiechef’s wares are quite simply put, works of art, so beautiful and clever in design that it will completely lift the star rating of your kitchen back home.

Anyway, I did a quick search for a replacement scale for Chantelle on their frankly amazing, quirky, clever, and most importantly, beautifully designed website (just note, it is pink – very, very pink – in other words, if you are a manly man then you may find yourself gritting your teeth for the most part), and settled on one that I thought would do this job pretty nicely – the Soehnle Siena kitchen scale.

I was thoroughly impressed with how intuitive, streamlined and simple it was to register and complete the sale via the site, and even more impressed with the fact that they offer free delivery on all South African orders.

An unexpected plus for me however is the fact that they are situated in Westlake Business Park, which just happens to be literally a few buildings to the left of where Touchwork’s offices are, meaning that my scale was ordered in the morning, and in the afternoon someone casually strolled over and dropped off the gleaming white box emblazoned with the pink Yuppiechef sealing tape!

And the class didn’t end there mind you. When Chantelle excitedly opened up her package, I was pleased to see the meticulous care towards their branding continued through to their boxing, with everything from a handwritten pink card to a magnet fridge noughts and crosses piece being present!

Very impressive, and thus certainly an online presence which will be seeing a lot more business from me – and probably Chantelle now that she knows the secret! :)

(P.S. The scale is pretty awesome as well, just in case you were wondering!)

Bart Sears and Mark Pennington: Rogue Trooper #15 Cover (1987)

Although a staple in the comic book market back home in Britain, 2000 AD has always traditionally struggled to get a proper foothold or even liking in the American comic book market, though it certainly hasn’t been for the lack of trying. In the 1980′s Quality Comics decided to produce a full colour reprint and repackaging of some classic 2000 AD Rogue Trooper stories for a wider market, ending up with a 37 issue run on their hands and more importantly, introducing some great cover art from the now comic book veteran, Bart Sears.

And as you can see for yourself, picking Sears (with a little help from inker Mark Pennington) to do the classic lone soldier depiction was certainly an inspired choice!

Joke Factory: Rounding Up

Wondering just how many sheep he currently has grazing in his field, the farmer asks his sheepdog to go out and count them.

The dog runs into the field, counts them, and then runs back to his master.

“So,” asks the farmer, “How many sheep are there?”

“40,” replies the dog.

“What? How can there be 40?!” exclaims the farmer. “I only bought 38!”

“I know,” says the dog. “But I rounded them up.”
