My Opinion Download… GetBackers (Volume 4)

They’ve found the Stradivarius. Now to the hard part – getting it back! Of course, that is their job… and do it they must, even if it means once again going up against the mighty Protector, Ryudo Hishiki. The Protector is a big, burly, bone-crushing bodyguard with a serious beef to with our fearless heroes.

But when Ginji takes out the lights, the brave turns to the blind Madoka to get them out of the bind!

Volume 4 continues the adventures of the GetBackers retrieval service duo of Evil Eye-bearing Ban Mido and electrically charged Ginji Amano, with them this time around tasked with trying to retrieve a young, blind musician’s prize Stradivarius violin from a seedy underworld family.

To make matters even more difficult, the man who has stolen the priceless violin has hired a number of freelancers to protect it, including Shido the Beastmaster and Ryudo Hishiki, the unstoppable protector. What happens from here on out is one long struggle and fight as the boys and their charge face off against their adversaries in an attempt to reach the violin, before tackling the even more difficult task of getting back out again! And to make matters worse, there are a couple of hidden assassins also waiting in the wings to strike when the opportunity presents itself!

Writer Yuya Aoki, under the pen name of Tadashi Agi, is behind the adventure once more, delivering a volume that is full of action and suspense, brining in no less than six or seven big fights before the last page. As per usual there is a lot of clever use around the Evil Eye ability, and of course Ginji’s more mundane electricity generating abilities, and so to sum it up this volume is very much about the action.

However, apart from the very cool use of the Evil Eye ability, it is really difficult to get into and enjoy Aoki’s style of writing, which often feels very forced, over dramatic and sometimes over the top. It just doesn’t flow all that well and I found myself laboring to get through the book, despite the fact that is contains so many fight sequences which normally should fly by!

The art of Rando Ayamine is quite frankly inconsistent, bordering on terrible at times, with his biggest problem appearing to be putting heads on bodies. The way his heads often connect to their respective bodies are often quite ridiculous, and too many times do his hardcore characters of Ban and Ginji just appear to… well “girly”. Still, it is not all bad and he does capture a lot of the action sequences quite well, as well as present some fantastic horror sequences when it comes to the Evil Eye bits. Oh and his comedy switch up style is pre

Overall, I really didn’t enjoy this outing, and it’s a pity because I remember kind of enjoying the anime series (based on this) a couple of years back. I found it a chore to work through, and that is quite frankly never a good thing, meaning that I can’t really recommend anyone bother with this.

Ouch.

The Wagners, Braai and Jessica Weekend

Having not seen Jessica for a whole week now was simply far too much, so for this weekend past I hatched a plan which saw me spend time with her both Saturday and Sunday, thereby scratching the itch and making it a little easier to make it through the next week that she continues her stay with Oupa and Ouma out in Bellville, whilst the creché remains closed for their year-end break.10

Whilst Friday night was pretty much dominated by the awesome XBOX 360 game that is Vanquish (Chantelle is working bloody late at the guest house at the moment, stupid In Season period!), Saturday was a different story, when after a decent sleep I arose and gathered everything I needed for my morning outing.

My plans did receive a little bit of a setback when I realised that I had allowed Chantelle to go into work with her car instead of mine, a problem because my baby car seat is currently inhabiting Monty’s Tucson, thus of no use to me. Luckily this was easily resolved by a quick trip through to the guest house where I switched keys with Chantelle, jumping into her little green Getz and shooting through to Bellville where I met up with Pops and Ryan at the Bellville Lotter Stronghold.

A quick check and pack of the boot, and we were off in Dad’s Lexus SUV, heading straight to Wagner’s Golf Academy in Durbanville, where our mission for the afternoon would be a full 18 holes of their not quite so easy and fairly technical little mashie course.

Seeing as neither Ryan nor Dad have ever played at Wagner’s before, I was at a slight advantage having played there once before (in my previous disastrous outing with Robert where he wiped the floor with me as I continued to whack, and lose, balls left, right and centre!), a fact that I seemingly made use of as I managed to win the first nine holes by a shot and tie for first on the back nine, making me overall winner of the day (with dispute coming from Ryan’s corner. In case you’re wondering, the score was a not so stellar 39 on the front and 40 on the back. Luckily for me, neither Ryan nor Dad fired on all cylinders from the get go!).

Last time I tried to play everything with my pitching wedge, a problem because I wasn’t able to extract much lift out of it. This time however it was sand wedge pretty much all of the way, generating enough loft for me and leading to some pretty nice shots, backed up with putting which for a change wasn’t too horrible at all! For the three hours that we were there in the light breeze and blistering sun, I only managed to lose a single ball, something I’m quite chuffed when taking my last visit to Wagners in consideration!

Anyway, following our successful late morning/afternoon out, next stop for me was a pick up of Jessica from Oupa and Ouma’s house, where I was quite pleased to find that Jess still remembered her old man, breaking into a huge smile when I walked in by the door. (Apparently, she didn’t do this when Chantelle went to visit her during the week, going even so far to get a little upset when Mommy wanted to hold her! Shame, Chantelle was pretty devastated about that!)

Back at my folks’ place, it was a quick bite to eat, before a change into swimming costumes for the whole family, and into the pool where Mom, Pops, Ryan, Jessie and I had a complete ball, frolicking around in the water for well over an hour!

A yoghurt later and it was out for the count for a now dry but exhausted Jessica, while the folks and I wiled away the afternoon by watching golf and tennis, waiting for the little one to wake up so that we could get free (and cute) entertainment once more!

As all good things tend to do, the day did eventually come to an end, and so I dutifully deposited young Jess Jess back with Oupa and Ouma, before hitting the road back to Gordon’s Bay, where I patiently waited the late return of Chantelle from work (with more Vanquish).

Sunday was braai day, as Monty, Cheryl and Rob brought Jessica through to come and braai with us in the early afternoon during Chantelle’s split. Once again it was a scorcher of a day, and for some or other reason I made the silly mistake of braaing using the inside braai. Not my brightest of moments and needless to say, I suffered for it! :)

Anyway, regardless of that, the meat came out delicious as we crowded around the little air conditioner in the lounge, enjoying a great meal and great company, as well as exceptional entertainment courtesy of the always cute as a button Jess!

Eventually it all had to come to an end though, as Chantelle returned to work for her late shift, sparking the return of the Montgomery Clan with Jessica to Bellville, leaving me on mop up duty and then with just enough time to blast away plenty more Russian RIs in the excellent Vanquish on the XBOX 360! (Oh, and maybe I squeezed in a bit of blogging here and there as well.)

So yeah, after reading all of the above, definitely a good weekend that was had, even if wifey was on duty for most of it! :)

Monkey Town with Jessica

I tried really hard to get out and about with Jessica as much as possible over my December vacation period, and one of the trips we managed to go out on was to Monkey Town, literally down the (National) road from us, and a place that neither Chantelle nor I had been to in at least three years!

Pleasingly, despite the fact that it doesn’t seem like anything has changed at all in those three years gone by, Monkey Town remains an awesome experience for the little ones (and to an extent the adults), and Jessica for one certainly enjoyed it!

For a change, Chantelle was available to join us for our little excursion, and so late morning after all the naps and feeds were dispensed with, we drove out to Monkey Town where Chantelle twisted my arm that first order of the day should be a light lunch at the pub/restaurant situated adjacent to the Monkey Town facility, overlooking the cool family braai, swim and play area that sprawls out in front of it.

After enjoying our food, next stop for the pram was Monkey Town reception, where we handed over our money, convinced the cashier that Jessica still made the cutoff for free entrance (instead of the R10 required for children over a year), grabbed a map and listened to the helpful instructions from the girl welcoming everyone in.

As luck would have it, feeding of the small monkeys had just recently taken place, meaning that all the food troughs in the massive enclosures with full of fruits and whatnot, meaning that the legion of squirrel monkeys, capuchins and lemur had been drawn out of the shade and into full view of the multitude of spectators that had braved the scorching heat in order to come monkey watching!

Jessica love being up so close and personal with the playful little monkeys, and eventually we managed to drag her away (there was no way she was going to stay stuck in the pram to watch all of this!), past the rutting tortoises, and just in time to see the handlers lure the chimpanzees out of their shady enclosure and into the outside play area island for some yummy snacks and drinks (which come in normal Energade bottles which the chimps open themselves and drink out of!).

After this it was pretty much straight into dawdle mode whilst trying to get Jessica to make monkey noises, and after a quick return to the start point to give Jessica her bottle and for us to grab something to drink, it was back along the walkways, taking in the various monkeys and lemurs that were on display in the variety of enclosures that make up Monkey Town.

To be frank, the selection of monkeys isn’t particularly huge at Monkey Town, but there are enough to be interesting and like I said before, the kids absolutely love the furry critters, meaning that even if there are a 1000 squirrel monkeys to take in, they’re certainly not going to complain!

One of the sights which I did in particular like was the up and close with the emus which Monkey Town has acquired (I think I counted about five). The male makes the most peculiar of noises when a human man (i.e. me) walks past, sounding almost like the beat of a drum! Guess I was a little bit too threatening or close to him? He certainly didn’t mind the ladies walking by, that’s for sure!

We spend a good hour and a half to two hours ambling around with Jessie and her pram, before Chantelle’s time was finally up and she needed to return to work, marking the end of our enjoyable little excursion with the carpet crawler/finger nibbler!

And based on that, I’ve got a good feeling that Monkey Town might be seeing a little more of the Lotter Clan from now on… ;)

Little Mini Disasters

Sigh, so many little negative things to start the year off with, so I may as well list them here, why not?

The first not so lekker thing is of course the creché being closed for a month and only reopening in the middle of January, meaning that Jessica is now staying over with the Montgomery Clan back in Bellville. Sure it’s nice to get a mini break from the little carpet crawler, but to be very honest, two weeks is far, far too long to be away from my bubbly little girl, and after the second evening without seeing her, it was simply too much! I miss my Jessie!! :(

Another little negative start to the year is the official looking piece of post that arrived and which was addressed to me, one which when Chantelle saw it, she laughed, and then handed over to me with an evil grin. It turns out that the section of the N2 leading up to the Sir Lowry’s road turn-off after the Broadlands turn-off is not really the N2 after all. Speed limit is 80 km/h, not 102 km/h as my little Getz was travelling. Bam, R200 fine right there! (Luckily it was only a 102 km/h on that stretch. Normally that’s a 120 km/h piece for me and pretty much everyone else on the road!)

Ugh, and my training shoes finally went and gave in – I managed to walk them completely through with all my road training, so much so that I could poke my finger pretty much through the bottom of the shoe and tickle the underside of my foot! So another purchase that needed to be made – thankfully though Power running shoes aren’t exactly the most expensive on the shelves! :)

Sigh, not monetary this one, but probably the most depressing of them all, my weight completely exploded over the two and a bit weeks that I was on holiday, completely knocking off all the gains I had finally started to make and putting me well, well back behind step 1 even. Sigh, definitely not very happy about that one!

Linked to this is the next negative little thing to hit, namely my knees. I played one morning of badminton at the Church with the folks and friends during my break, and all of a sudden my knees can’t recover and I’m struggling with them each time I sit down or get up now. Sigh, not cool, not cool.

Now for pretty much the biggest negative wave to hit us at the start of the year – in short, Chantelle’s eyes are pretty much buggered. We’ve gotten two opinions now from two different optometrists, but the diagnosis is the same. Her eyes which are a lot poorer than mine and also suffer from astigmatism, are now rejecting contact lenses and the blood vessels that are growing into her eye to try and increase oxygen flow are overtaking everything. With the rapidly deteriorating sight combined with her already poor eyesight makes spectacle wear cumbersome and not really practical, and with contact lenses out of the picture, both optometrists suggest we start speaking to people regarding Lasik surgery to try and correct the problem.

And that as we all know, that costs pretty much over the R20,000 mark, and is NOT covered by medical aid, so will have to come out of our funds somehow.

So I guess it is just as well that the guy hasn’t been available yet to come around and take my bonus money so that he can redo our kitchen cupboards such that we can finally have bought a dishwasher for the house. Oh well, such is life.

Sigh, surely these are far too many little negative niggles to start the year off with? O.o

Eric Basaldua and Nei Ruffino: Salem’s Daughter #0 Cover (2009)

Zenescope, known for their usually provocative cover art featuring scantily clad women, unleashed Salem’s Daughter in 2009, written by Ralph Tedesco with interior artwork from Caio Menescal.

From their release notes: The Salem witch trials of 1692 resulted in the hangings of 19 women and men. Over the years many came to realize that the trials were perhaps done in haste with no hard evidence of witchcraft being used by any of the accused.

Two hundred years later, Anna Williams, is living a regular uneventful life in Essex County, Massachusetts. But there is more to Anna than meets the eye… much more.

Now Anna is beginning to discover her unique powers and knows her life will never be the same as she reluctantly decides to follow her true calling. And a hardened and bitter gunslinger named Braden Cole is the one man who can help her along the way.

The series kicked off numbered with zero issue, and this first in the series featured a fantastic wraparound cover featuring some very angry and fiery ladies courtesy of the art team of Eric Basaldua and Nei Ruffino.

Nice.

Joke Factory: One Ravish Please

A farmer goes to a livestock dealer and buys an anvil, a bucket, two chickens, and a goose. The farmer looks at his varied purchases and exclaims, “Damn it, I WALKED here. How in the world am I going carry all of this home?!?”

The livestock dealer replied, “Why don’t you put the anvil in the bucket, carry the bucket in one hand, put a chicken under each arm and carry the goose in your other hand?”

“Hey, thanks!” the farmer said, and off he went.

As he was walking down the road towards his home, he meets a little old lady who tells him that she is lost. She asks, “Can you tell me how to get to 1515 Mockingbird Lane?”

The farmer thinks for a bit and says, “Well, as a matter of fact, I live just down the road from there. Let’s take my short cut and go down this alley. We’ll be there in no time.”

To this the little old lady replied, “I am a lonely widow without a husband to defend me. How do I know that when we get in the alley you won’t hold me up against the wall, pull up my skirt, and ravish me?”

The farmer said, “Holy smokes lady! I am carrying a bucket, an anvil, two chickens, and a goose. How in the world could I possibly hold you up against the wall and do that?!?”

“Well, you could set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the anvil on top of the bucket… and I’ll hold the chickens.”
