Red Sonja Cosplay: Red Sonja (Belle Chere) Cosplay 15 SEP 2013

The sword-slinging she-devil that is Red Sonja, gets a fantastic cosplay effort here courtesy of American cosplayer Belle Chere, who doesn’t seem to mind the cold all that much!

Red Sonja, the She-Devil with a Sword, is a fictional character, a high fantasy sword and sorcery heroine created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, and loosely based on Red Sonya of Rogatino in Robert E. Howard’s 1934 short story “The Shadow of the Vulture”. She first appeared in the Marvel Comics book Conan the Barbarian #23 (February 1973).

After the murder of her family and her rape by a Mercenary group, Sonja’s cries of revenge were answered by the red goddess Scáthach, who appeared to her and instilled within her incredible skill in terms of the handling of swords and other weapons of war, on the condition that she would never lie with a man unless he defeated her in fair combat.

This revenge-driven warrior has since become the archetypical example of the fantasy female barbarian, being fierce and stunningly beautiful, and wearing armour that resembles either a bikini or lingerie.

We can all thank artists Esteban Maroto and Boris Vallejo for that, now can’t we? ;)

Comic Book Art: Nightwing (post reboot) by Michel Mulipola Comic Book Art | Comic Books 20 DEC 2011

Samoan comic book artist (and professional wrestler to boot!) Michel Mulipola, put out this great piece showing off the new DC Comic’s Nightwing character (in other words, post their big reboot), featuring the now armoured red and black fighting suit which replaces the old blue and black garb we were so used to seeing Dick Grayson appear in over the years.

Very simple pencils following by very simple, if present at all, lines makes for a stunningly vivid piece of art. Also, note the subtle bit of symbolism in the sky.

Beautiful, just plain beautiful.

Royal Black Guard Sketches, Paint & Photoshop 02 JAN 2011

Seeing as our little Jessica had finally joined us after her nearly two month long stay at the hospital neonatal intensive care unit, New Year’s Eve 2011 promised nothing more than a night in with Chantelle and my baby girl, meaning of course as the manly provider I needed to organise supper. So out came the wood, charcoal and meat and on went the last braai of 2010.

However, seeing as Chantelle was preoccupied with Jessica, I needed to entertain myself, and for no reason other than I can, I whipped up the following black ballpoint pen sketch based on one of my McFarlane figurines.

I think I’ll name him as being part of the Royal Black Guard. Sounds fitting enough!
