Coastal Walks and White Houses in Jacobsbaai (2018-03-30) Photo Gallery | Travel Attractions 28 JAN 2019

We have been visiting Jacobsbaai for a good couple of years now, and 2018 was no different, with us spending a short but sweet weekend with Chantelle’s folks at the always comfortable Artist’s Retreat guest house.

The weekend itself was punctuated with plenty of strolls around the lovely little village, a trip through to Velddrif and Laaiplek, a visit to the surprise church bazaar that popped up, plenty of socializing, and of course LOTS of rest and relaxation.

Oh, and there was even a little fun run (of all things) that took place on the Saturday morning. I don’t know why I mention it. None of us were there to jog.

Oppiwa Weekend in Jacobsbaai (2016-02-05) Photo Gallery 21 MAR 2016

Back in February we found ourselves enjoying quite a good weekend away in Jacobsbaai, having travelled there to attend the fun Oppiwa Festival.

All in all we were quite a big Montgomery-related family group that booked out Priscilla’s Artist’s Retreat guest house, with the end result being a thoroughly enjoyable, sociable and entertaining weekend.

With my leg still being reasonably weak though, I skipped out on joining the others on their musician/wagon/wine trips, tasked instead with looking after the girls for the weekend – which translated to a trip to the Cape Columbine light house (more on that later), multiple play dates at both Panarottis and Spur in the West Coast Mall – but sadly, no strolls around Jacobsbaai itself!

By all accounts, the Oppiwa festival itself was loads of fun – Chantelle and the others had an absolute blast. On the whole, the weather was good, the company great, and the food delicious!

(Still, it would have been a lot nicer had I been a bit more mobile! Not a lot of photos this time around I’m afraid…)

The Oppiwa Festival held annually in Jacobsbaai is a brilliant little Afrikaans music festival with an interesting twist. Each musician get assigned a tractor-pulled wagon for which you then buy a ticket for, the end result being a two hour excursion that includes a ride around the dusty town with the artist, getting up nice and close and personal, with the whole thing then culminating with a stop at a random guest house for a spread of delicious eats and of course an impromptu private session with the musician.

Oh, and at the start of it all you get given a tin mug which is kept filled with wine from start to finish. In other words, a recipe for a guaranteed fun afternoon out!

Monty and Cheryl had invited Chantelle and myself to join them for the festival this year, and after an eventful journey from Gordon’s Bay to Jacobsbaai, we found ourselves in the calming and tranquil little West Coast village of Jacobsbaai late Friday afternoon, meeting up with everyone at Priscilla’s The Artists’ Retreat Guest House – our usual go to destination for whenever we’re on that side of the world! :)

Joining us for the weekend was Robert and his new girlfriend Tarryn Botha, and with all the sleeping arrangements organised and bags unpacked, it was decided to keep out of Priscilla’s hair (who was scrambling about, trying to get all the food preparations done for her hosting of a wagon on Saturday) by going out for supper to the Weskus Mall (in Vredenburg).

We knew that Panarottis in the mall has a play area, but our plans were scuppered when on entering the mall, Jessica spotted Yukon Spur’s huge outdoor play area – which of course meant Spur it was! With Jess immediately off to play, the rest of us settled down to enjoy some family food (I can never really bring myself to call Spur’s food good) and plenty of excited chatter.

Happily, despite all the tummy bugs that seemed to be in the air (Emily, Chantelle and I were struggling a little), and despite Emily’s horrendous head butt of the wall a little earlier when we were first setting up the room (the bump on her forehead pretty much remained there for the rest of the weekend!), the kids and Chantelle and myself enjoyed a good night’s sleep, only waking up on Saturday at a much later time than normal! (Sleep, beautiful sleep!)

The morning was spent walking, eating a delicious guest house breakfast, playing pool, and of course a trip through to Paternoster for a beer (with the lovebirds) at the Paternoster Hotel.

Back in Jacobsbaai, everyone got ready for their Oppiwa experience – well everyone but me.

As things turned out, when we’d originally bought tickets for the sold out festival, we managed to get just enough for the five of us (Anna Davel, formerly of Cut Glass, being the only wagon we could still book). However, with Robert now bagging a girlfriend at the last minute (and the first one in a very, VERY long time), I refused to stand in the way of young love and gave my ticket up to Tarryn, meaning that for the afternoon whilst everyone was drinking wine and making merry, I would be spending some time with Emily and Jessica, treating them to clothes and ice cream at the mall. (Which I always enjoy doing anyway!)

From all reports the Oppiwa experience was loads of fun, Anna Davel was mesmerizing, and we’ve pretty much already decided that we’ll just have to be back next year again! The evening was then spent around a blazing fire on the roof deck, dancing to some Afrikaanse treffers and chowing on all the Oppiwa stopover leftovers – the perfect way to round off what had been an excellent day.

As for Sunday, well that was spent mostly around the pool table and big, big braai on the deck – yet again the perfect was to spend a Sunday at the close of a good weekend away. Oh, and of course, I managed to grab some photos on my phone whilst we were there:

(Oh, and unlike our trip there, we didn’t get lost on the way back).

We visited with Priscilla at her guest house in Jacobsbaai for the first time last year February, and one year later, we found ourselves once again packing our bags and joining Monty and Cheryl for what turned out to be a thoroughly relaxing weekend at the always welcoming Artists’ Retreat guest house.

2013-03-23 09.50.22

It was a pretty short weekend for Chantelle and myself, just Friday and Saturday evening after all, but for little Jess it’ll go on for a little longer – she stayed behind for another three nights with Monty and Cheryl, primarily because they were rather keen to show her off to Bernard and company who are also down for a little holiday break, staying over in the picturesque Paternoster for the week.

The weather was palatable, the entertainment subdued, and the food fantastic (alongside Chantelle’s cupcakes and treats that travelled through with us, Monty braaied on Friday, I braaied on Saturday, and for breakfast we went to the Weskusplek restaurant on Saturday and then enjoyed a guest house breakfast on Sunday courtesy of Priscilla and her mom!).

Jess had fun stealing everyone’s shoes and clomping around in them and like I said, Chantelle and I pretty much just slept in, lazed about and unwound – in other words a weekend of relaxation well spent!

Jacobsbaai Weekend Away with the Montgomery Clan My Life 17 FEB 2012

Xander (short for Alexander) is the tenant who has been inhabiting Monty’s Granny flat for the last couple of years, and in that time, Xander and his mom have struck up a great friendship with the family. A month or two ago, Xander’s mom set up her very first guest house in the quaint fishing town of Jacobsbaai, and as luck would have it, she invited Chantelle, Jessie and myself to come through for a weekend, so that Chantelle could maybe give her some tips on how she might improve her fledgling business.

And as it turned out, the weekend we picked just happened to coincide with the weekend that Monty and company were heading through in order to drop off furniture which Priscilla had purchased from Monty’s dad.

In other words, family-in-law weekend time! :)

I took the Friday off to maximise our weekend, and early afternoon the three of us finished up with packing, bundled ourselves into the car, and made the long trip through to Jacobsbaai, a good couple of hours away from Gordon’s Bay up the West Coast. Again, we struck it lucky when we fell in behind Monty on the road, as he knew exactly where we needed to go, a bit of information which we ourselves didn’t actually possess!

Anyway, we got there well before the sun had set, and set about making ourselves at home in Priscilla’s fantastic little “farmhouse at the sea” guest house, better known as Artists’ Retreat. After that, the boys got busy carrying in and rearranging the new furniture in the lounge, a process that took far longer than what it should have thanks to “too many cooks in the kitchen”! :)

Priscilla treated us to a delicious homemade supper, and after much chatter, pool versus Robert (they have a pool table, bonus!), and catching up, we eventually all turned in for the night, where I must admit, I enjoyed a thoroughly restful sleep.

Saturday enjoyed a nice and lazy start, but after a hearty breakfast courtesy of Chantelle and her helpers, we did eventually head out, first to the lovely Weskus Mall where Chantelle insisted we try the cheesecake from Café Graze, before hitting Paternoster where we stopped in at the fabulous Modo Mio for a sumptuous, lazy seafood lunch. Chantelle, Jessie and I then split from the Montgomery Clan and did a bit of a drive around Paternoster to take in the tranquil sights.

The remaining part of Saturday was taken up by a stroll through Jacobsbaai with Monty, loads more pool with Robert, a fantastic braai for supper, and then a couple of highly competitive rounds of 30 Seconds to round off another late night!

Sunday started off in a very similar fashion to Saturday, with a thoroughly enjoyable breakfast, followed by more pool with Robert, and then a walk with Chantelle, Rob, Xander and Jess all the way down to the abandoned sea lookout at the edge of Jacobsbaai.

Afternoon rolled in and after a tasty chicken lunch, it was time for the dreaded packing up to begin, after which goodbyes were spoken and we bustled back into our cars, hitting the long road home with the goal in mind of making it back to Gordon’s Bay in time for Jessie’s night time routine to kick in.

I can’t quite remember now off the top of my head, but I do think we came pretty close!

So yeah, thanks to Priscilla and her mom for their hospitality in their awesome little guest house, thanks to the Montgomery Clan for the great companionship, and thanks to wifey and baby for making it such an awesome and relaxing weekend away from television, technology and the working world! :)
