New X-Men Cosplay: X-23 (Nadyasonika) Cosplay 15 MAY 2014

Mexican industrial design student, costume designer and maker, cosplayer, model, and gamer Nadya Anton is perhaps better known by her online handle Nadyasonika. For this particular cosplay outing she brings to life the wickedly effective mutant X-23!

Cloned from a damaged copy of Wolverine’s genome, X-23 was created to be the perfect killing machine. For years, she proved herself a notable assassin, though a series of tragedies eventually led her to Wolverine and the X-Men, with whom she now seeks to turn her life around.

X-23 is a female clone created from Wolverine’s genetic material. Consequently, her mutant powers are similar to his. Like Wolverine, X-23’s primary mutant ability is an accelerated healing factor that allows her to regenerate damaged or destroyed tissues with far greater speed and efficiency than an ordinary human. Injuries such as gunshot wounds, slashes, and puncture wounds completely heal within a matter of minutes. Her healing factor is developed to such a degree that she can reattach severed limbs. She has also been shown to be able to regrow limbs.

The effects of her accelerated healing powers extend to her body’s immune system, rendering her immune to disease and infection. She is also immune to most drugs and toxins, although she can be affected by certain drugs if given sufficient dosage.

X-23’s mutant healing factor heightened her physical senses, strength, speed, agility, reflexes/reactions, coordination, balance, endurance to superhuman levels. Like Wolverine, X-23 possesses retractable claws sheathed within her forearms (though unlike Wolverine, she only sports two claws). She releases the claws through the tissue of her knuckles, leaving small wounds which are healed by her healing factor.

She also possesses a single, retractable claw housed within each foot. Although her skeletal structure wasn’t fused with adamantium like Wolverine’s was, her claws were all extracted, coated and then re-inserted, meaning that she comes with the same cutting power as the original.

Born and raised in captivity, X-23 has been trained to become a living weapon. She is highly trained in the use of long range weapons and explosives and is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant, with intensive training in numerous armed and unarmed martial arts techniques. She has also been subjected to conditioning in which a specific “trigger scent” has been used to send her into a berserker rage, killing anything in sight; Emma Frost is unsure if this will ever be fully suppressed.

She is also highly educated and so far has displayed that she is fluent in French and Japanese.

Tekken Cosplay: Nina Williams (Nebulaluben) Cosplay 18 FEB 2014

Spanish cosplayer Laura, one half of the boyfriend/girlfriend cosplay team Nebulaluben, is known for her great fighting game related cosplays. This outing is no different as she brings to life the calculating Nina Williams, from Namco’s famed Tekken franchise.

Nina Williams is a fictional character from Namco’s Tekken fighting game series. A cold-blooded Irish assassin, Nina made her first appearance in Tekken, the original game in the series, and is one of three playable characters (the others being Paul Phoenix and Heihachi Mishima), and the only female character to appear in every installment in the series. She also starred in her own spin-off game, Death by Degrees.

Nina has an unstable and often violent relationship with her younger sister, Anna Williams, who is frequently her arch-rival in the series. She is known for her fast and lethal fighting style, based loosely on the fighting arts hapkido and koppojutsu, among others. The character was mostly very well received, often regarded as one of the best Tekken characters as well as one of the most attractive and stylish female characters in gaming.

In the recent (and pretty good actually) Tekken movie, Nina was portrayed by ex-South African television personality, Candice Hillebrand.

Gaming Update: Dead Rising 2 | Assassin’s Creed II Games | My Reviews 18 SEP 2013

I game few and far between these days, with the greatest slice of my gaming time being made up of online FIFA 13 battles with Ryan. That said, here’s a quick round up of my thoughts on the games that I have played over the last couple of months – funnily enough, all coming my way courtesy of the current Microsoft Games with Gold initiative…

Dead Rising 2 (2010)

Five years after the events of Dead Rising, former motocross champion Chuck Greene is in the casino town of Fortune City, Nevada, to take part in Terror Is Reality, a controversial sports entertainment game show where contestants kill zombies for money and fame. Chuck needs the prize money to buy Zombrex (a daily medication that suppresses the zombification process) for his daughter Katey, who was bitten by her zombified mother during a previous outbreak in Las Vegas.

However as you might have guessed, caged zombies seldomly stay caged for long, meaning that pretty soon Chuck is running amok to clear his name, save people’s lives and keep Katey from turning into a zombie!

Dead Rising 2 is a 3rd person action game from Capcom that features some fantastically detailed shopping complex environments to move around in and beat up horde upon horde of shuffling zombies (interspersed with the odd crazy and psychopath) with whatever tool or fixture you can find lying about. (Seriously, just about anything can be used as a weapon, and best of all, you can combine multiple items into bigger badder zombie killing devices, some of which get pretty inventive in the process!). All of this open world beat-down action then gets wrapped up in a pretty enjoyable character-driven mystery story and complemented with a great soundtrack, voice acting and cutscenes, the end result being a pretty polished and neat zombie game.

That said, I don’t really enjoy zombie stories, meaning that I didn’t really enjoy this outing, and consequently haven’t bothered finishing it.

However, if you ARE a fan of zombies and their like, then without a doubt you’ll get a proper kick out of it – so worth it if you’re in that boat then.

(Oh, and in terms of gameplay overall, my only real gripe, apart from the plenty of load screens you encounter, is the fact that the strict time limits put on missions and the main storyline stops you from fully exploring the wonderfully built environment and properly exploring the various ways of mowing down zombies like you should have been able to!)

Assassin’s Creed II (2009)

After being forced to relive the genetic memories of ancestral assassin Altair ibn-La’Ahad through a machine known as the “Animus”, Desmond Miles is freed from his imprisonment by Abstergo Industries employee Lucy Stillman and together they make a daring escape.

Now in a safe place and in possession of Abstergo data and an upgraded Animus 2.0, Desmon agrees to re-enter the Aimus and relive the genetic memories of ancestral nobleman Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who lived during the Renaissance period of the late 15th and early 16th centuries in Italy. An assassin born from the murder of his family, Ezio, and thus Desmond, are now on a hunt to solve the mystery surrounding the age old Knights Templar movement.

If you are a fan of historical pieces then you are going to love Assassin’s Creed and its incredibly detailed conspiracy-driven story line. If you are not, then you are still going to love Assassin’s Creed and its incredibly detailed conspiracy-driven story line.

Seriously, this game is that good.

An absorbing story told via the polished and well executed platform of a 3rd person stealth-action open world game which sees you scaling walls, running along rooftops and causing all kinds of bloody chaos, before slinking back into the shadows or blending in with a cloud to avoid capture. A massive world, beautifully rendered environments, fluid movement mechanics, loads of cutscenes, and some decent enemy AI, all work in conjunction with a great setting, beautiful musical score and enjoyable voice acting to result in a game that is really worth your time to play.

In other words, I REALLY enjoyed this one from Ubisoft.

Queen’s Blade Cosplay: Melona (Aizou Masaki) Cosplay 24 AUG 2013

This week we showcase a Japanese in our Cosplay Cuties entry, so put your hands together for Aizou Masaki, who opts to bring to life the Queen’s Blade shape-shifting assassin, Melona!

For those of you not familiar with the Rie Kugimiya voiced character from the popular ecchi Anime series Queen’s Blade, Melona is a shape-shifting magic user in the service of the Swamp Witch, a shapeless assassin that seems to be made up entirely of a viscous pink liquid and who has the ability to take on the shape of anything or anyone she imagines. Her primary attack is her acid shot that erupts from her nipples (Yeah, don’t ask me how they came up with that one!). Difficult to harm and even harder to kill, Melona is certainly an unstable character that you definitely don’t want to get on the wrong side of!

Oh, and don’t call her a monster. (She REALLY doesn’t seem to like that!)

New X-Men Cosplay: X-23 (Vasher) Cosplay 20 MAR 2013

Wondercon 2011 saw American cosplayer Vasher put in a good effort of bringing to life the deadly mutant assassin, X-23.

Assassin’s Creed Cosplay: Altair (Lee Camara) Cosplay 26 FEB 2012

Lee Camara, a woman known for her many wonderful cosplay prop designs and and subsequent productions, sometimes also takes the time out to don her own creations, this time putting on one highly detailed costume and assuming the identity of the enigmatic assassin Altair, from the fantastic Assassin’s Creed series.

Altair Ibn-La’Ahad (meaning Flying One – Son of no One) is the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed. He is of course an assassin born in 1165 and who lived during the third Crusade. He was born the son of a Muslim Arab father Umar Ibn-La’Ahad and a Christian Syrian mother who died during childbirth. During his childhood he left for Masyaf, Syria in order to begin his Assassin training.

Altair felt little at the death of his parents due to the nature of the Assassin order. Prior to the events of the series, Altair trained under Al Mualim, Master of the Assassin Brotherhood, quickly rising above his brethren in the abilities of mastering several weapons and skills ranging from hand to hand combat to sword fighting. This caught both Al Mualim’s eye and favor, and Altair was quickly promoted to the rank of Master Assassin.

All of which means that he was thus the perfect candidate to have his memories solicited by Abstergo through the use of Desmond and the Animus in their attempt to find the Piece of Eden.

And now you know.

Screenshot Saturday: Mezzo DSA (Episode 1) Anime 01 JAN 2011

Mikura, Kurokawa, and Harada are the 3 members of the Danger Service Agency (DSA). Mikura is the brawn of the group, Harada is the brains, and Kurokawa is just a bitter ex-cop who likes to think he’s in charge. They’ll take on any job as long as it involves lots of danger and, of course, money.

Not that much of it ever seems to come their way of course.
