Celebrating Dad’s 60th with Cake and Table Tennis (2016-05-29) Photo Gallery 08 JUN 2016

My dad, Ronnie Lötter, hit the big 60 eight days after I hit 36, but seeing as he was first off for a fabulous weekend of golf in George with his social golfing club, we had to wait a good couple of days more until we could enjoy a small family get together in order to celebrate this big milestone with the man himself!

That said, turning 60 wasn’t the only milestone being celebrated – the end of May marked dad’s official retirement, meaning that at long last he could achieve his dream of retiring early, a very exciting prospect for mom and dad both!

To celebrate, Mom organized a braai at their place, with Ryan, Claire, myself and our respective families all present, and with a beautiful warm winter’s day in place, we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon of good food, chatter, and of course cake.

To mark the occasion, Chantelle came up with this fantastic safari-themed two tier cake that pulled in all the important loves in dad’s life, namely the great outdoors, squash and badminton, family, and of course golf.

(I in particular loved the reference to dad’s dead goose – an Egyptian geese that he once accidentally felled on the golf driving range back in the day!)

Obviously everyone had quite a lot of food on the day, which is probably why it was best that we then spent the rest of the afternoon playing it off with some competitive attempts at table tennis. (The games weren’t particularly great, but boy were they fun!)

Happy birthday Dad. Thanks for everything that you did for us as kids, and enjoy your retirement – you certainly deserve it!

Jessica’s Bellville Birthday Party (2015-11-14) Photo Gallery 26 NOV 2015

This year Jessica had two birthday parties courtesy of Chantelle, one for Jess’ local school and complex friends (celebrated at Mondeor), and one for all the family and our friends in Bellville (celebrated at Monty and Cheryl’s house).

The theme was once again Frozen (of course), and this time around Chantelle went all out in terms of decorations and setup, with her and her little helpers (Cheryl, Monty, and Tarryn) working super hard on Saturday morning to setup the perfect Frozen-themed kiddie party!

(Whilst Emily, Jess and I bode our time by playing, shopping and walking among trees! All in the name of keeping the little ones from getting under foot!)

The cake was a spectacular, flowing Elsa dress cake, which was complemented by a host of yummy treats for both the kids and the adults alike.

Blue and white decorations filled the patio and back garden, but even more fun was all the activity stations that Chantelle had organised, each tackling a different Frozen-based theme (like building a snowman, taking Frozen themed photos, etc.).

Stars of the show were however the excellent face painter and balloon animal wrangler that Chantelle had hired, with the two of them faced with a literal never ending line of little ones having things painted and shapes twisted!

We had great weather, fantastic food, lots of friends and loads of fun – all the ingredients needed to make this without a doubt Jessica’s best birthday party ever!

Jessica’s Fourth Birthday Party (2014-11-16) Photo Gallery 02 JUL 2015

So somehow we’re already in July now. Which of course means that we are hurtling towards the end of the year, which in turn then means that we’re hurtling towards Jessica’s fifth birthday party this coming November!

Which completely reminds me – other than the post detailing my bad knee injury (but with a spectacular fall) on the day, I never actually got around to posting the few photos I hastily snapped on what was the perfect day for my perfect little girl.

So let’s rectify that then shall we?

The party was held at the fantastic Mondeor Restaurant in Somerset West (next to the new Cape Garden Centre) who kind of specialise in hosting kiddies parties.

Lots of our family and friends, and friends’ kids, joined us on a very My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic themed day, and thanks to the gorgeous sunny weather, everyone had an absolute ball.

(Jess was particularly proud of the fact that as far as she was concerned, she was dressed exactly as Rainbow Dash would be!)

The snacks and food were great, Chantelle’s two tier My Little Pony cake was a hit, and of course, the kid’s treats were spot on.

Naturally, loads of fun was had (and time spent) in the splash pool, and so as it is pretty plain to see by now – Jessica’s fourth birthday party was definitely a big hit on the day! :)

Needless to say, Jessica was also pretty chuffed that her My Little Pony collection grew a little in the process…

Grayson’s 1st Birthday Party (2015-01-10) Photo Gallery 11 JAN 2015

Yesterday Chantelle, Jess, Emily and I found ourselves making the trip through to Constantia in order to join up with the Carpenter Clan in order to celebrate Grayson’s 1st birthday. (Incredibly enough, today we’re actually out celebrating Emily’s first birthday – what a weekend for 1st birthday parties, eh?)

Although we again missed the street we needed to turn down in getting to Claire and Riley’s house, we were actually – amazingly – pretty much on time (in fact, it was almost satisfying to see a host of cars pull up just as I switched the Accent off).

Despite the fact that we were experiencing a gloriously sunny day back in Gordon’s Bay, here under the mountain things were certainly a lot more cloudy, but nevertheless, the weather played in everyone’s favour as it was warm enough to lounge outside without being so hot that everyone fried.

Chantelle and Riley had prepared a magnificent spread of finger foods, the children were all having a ball on the trampoline (Jess included), and what followed was a relaxing, enjoyable day out for all Claire and Riley’s family and friends (plus Rocky).

So a great start to what I’m sure will be many awesome parties to follow for young Grayson then – whom I’m sure should by his next birthday be putting out the candle by blowing on it instead of just grabbing it with his hand! :)

Bonus! Seeing as both Ryan and Grandpa had ventured on the trampoline, Chantelle wasn’t prepared to be left behind:

Chantelle’s Cookies and Cakes versus the Ants My Life 22 FEB 2012

Shame, I felt so sorry for poor Chantelle on Monday morning, after we woke up only to discover that overnight, a hungry horde of ants had descended upon the giant, moist, chocolate box cake that she had baked the previous evening for an order due to be delivered on Monday evening.

We are experiencing such a mission in terms of ant infestations this summer, and to be honest, it is so bad that you can’t leave anything remotely resembling food anywhere without a pack of ants starting their tell-tale supply line in the time it takes you to look away and then look back again! Of course with Jessica, full out insect poisoning won’t work, so for now it is defending the best we can, even if that means creating baby powder rings around all food items left outside of the fridge overnight, including the cat’s pellets (which of course results in quite cute and funny little white footprints appearing all over the house the next morning!).

Anyway, with the cake completely covered in ants and obviously a write-off (I cried a little as that big, delicious cake slid off into the black refuse bin), a new one had to be both baked and then iced and decorated – all before Monday evening’s delivery due date!

Impossible you might think, but not so. The cake was completed and delivered on time, much to the amazement (and ravenous joy) of the birthday recipient! (And as it stands, this marks Chantelle’s Cookies and Cakes first order to be generated thanks to the laminated A4 notice placed on our home’s outside wall!)

And of course, where would we be without some photographic evidence of the completed rescue cake? ;)

Jessica’s Kitty Cat Cake Jessica | My Life 21 NOV 2011

My wife can bake. Really, she can bake. And this is a good thing, a very, very good thing. For you see, it makes birthday parties awesome. And in particular, we now know that it makes kiddie parties awesome. Behold the most awesome, cutest cake you have ever laid eyes on – Jessica’s Kitty Cat Cake!

Loosely based on a recipe book design and constructed for Jessie’s 1st birthday party, the Kitty Cat Cake is made of a sculpted chocolate box cake interior, covered in decadent orange-colored butter icing with decorative piping, added detail with yellow butter icing, complemented by liquorice cuttings and a wine gum for a nose, and finished off with a sour fruit strip as the collar/ribbon. The grass is green coconut, and the entire cake board is bordered in delectable green-colored butter icing.

Truly, truly a delicious masterpiece, an absolute work of art, and most important of all, something Chantelle can be very, very proud of! Well done love, you’ve really outdone yourself this time! :)
