Milkshakes, Nutella and Breakfast at Koffi Terapi in Durbanville (2018-09-01) Photo Gallery | Restaurants 20 FEB 2019

Our plan was to visit the small Durbanville nature reserve by the race course and then eat breakfast at Evertsdal Opstal fell apart when on arrival both locations were closed for business. So instead we drove around Durbanville and spotted what looked to be a particular popular spot based on the amount of people milling about – and that’s the story of how the girls and I discovered Koffi Terapi.

Home to both lovely outdoor and indoor seated areas, the Koffi Terapi (great name!) coffee shop/eatery is immensely popular with the locals (as we discovered for ourselves based on a) how lucky we were to actually get a table and then b) how long it took for our order to actually come through). The menu is small but nicely rounded, the baked treats look delectable and the place makes good coffee.

As for the girls, well when they heard that there was both milkshake and nutella slathered flapjacks on the breakfast menu, well let’s just say there was no way that I was going to be allowed to leave the cafe any time soon!

Poached Eggs and Exploring the Beach in Pringle Bay (2018-04-21) Photo Gallery | Travel Attractions 30 JAN 2019

Upgraded road surface along Clarence Drive, Kogelberg views for days, delicious poached eggs benedict for breakfast from Simply Coffee and then some exploring of the rock pools, dunes and lovely beach of Pringle Bay – now that’s the way to spend a Saturday morning.

Interestingly enough – I am reasonably sure that this was the first time that I had ever actually made the effort to locate Pringle Bay’s beach. Unfortunately for me though, this also just happened to be the end of my trusty Huawei P8’s battery.

Hence the almost complete and utter lack of photos of said beach. Sigh.

Guess it just gives me a reason to head out back that way when I next get the chance.

Egg Dipped Croissants at Pajamas and Jam in Strand (2017-12-06) Photo Gallery | Restaurants 24 MAR 2018

Chantelle’s favourite little Helderberg restaurant is without a doubt one of the more unusual ones to be found in the area.

In the shadow of an old decommissioned naval helicopter perched on top the roof, flanked by both the family-run scrap dealer business and costume hire shop to either side, and situated in the heart of the very unsexy Strand industrial area, is the neatly painted, slightly unassuming, Pajamas +Jam Eatery.

Never mind that though – as with most of these little gems, it is on the inside where all the magic happens.

Run by a mother and her two daughters team, the premises of Pajamas and Jam houses a large collection of neatly arranged junk (sorry, I’ve been informed that those are all antiques and collectibles), in the middle of which is a fair number of mix and match tables and chairs.

To the side, hidden just behind the mouth wateringly decadent cake and bakes table is the kitchen, from which the most interesting and on trend foods are wheeled out on a constant basis. The use of top notch ingredients means an ever changing, well thought out menu that goes out of its way to surprise and delight.

Because of the decor and quality food, this eatery is by far more popular with the ladies than the men, and that shows, with the restaurant packed to the brim from early morning already. (Honestly, it’s always a gamble as to whether or not you’re going to get a space there!)

As I mentioned at the top of this post, given the fact that Pajamas and Jam is a firm favourite of Chantelle’s, it made perfect sense to head out that way for her (kid-free) birthday breakfast back in December last year.

Fancy french toast, deconstructed croissants and what not – no wonder she likes this place as much as what she does! ;)

Breakfast at Vergelegen Stables with Chantelle (2016-02-25) Photo Gallery 20 MAR 2016

So as I just mentioned, Terrance, Ryan and myself got together for a particularly enjoyable breakfast outing to the historic Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West.

It was a gorgeous sunny day, the food was fantastic, and the views spectacular.

So needless to say, Chantelle was super jealous and thus literally a week later, I found myself enjoying breakfast there once more.

Which really isn’t a bad thing at all!

Vergelegen Breakfast with Terrance and Ryan (2016-02-17) Photo Gallery 20 MAR 2016

It has been a good couple of years now since Terrance left our sunny shores for a life of teaching English in Japan, and while I have been over there once so far for his wedding, I pretty much rely on his annual(ish) visit to South Africa to catch up and learn all about his interesting life in the Land of the Rising Sun.

So as you might imagine, I was quite pleased to discover that he dropped into the country for a couple of days in February, so much so that I immediately suggested getting together for a nice breakfast at Vergelegen Wine Estate – an experience that he was instantly onboard for!

Established in 1700, the historic and beautiful Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West is a must visit if you’ve never been there before, and it was a great treat for both Ryan and Terrance, neither of whom had been there before. We enjoyed a leisurely and delicious breakfast (complemented with extremely expensive water I might add), before shuffling along and taking in the sights of the estate.

(I did my best to keep up on my crutches, but eventually I set the two free to go and explore while I worked my way slowly back to the car park!)

Following that, the three of us next headed over to Somerset Mall, where we caught an afternoon screening of Deadpool – which was surprisingly good. They really, really captured the essence of the character for the movie, with Ryan Reynolds proving to be the perfect actor for the role. (That sequence of him punching Colossus literally had me wiping away the tears of laughter!)

The movie done, I next convinced them that going for an ice cream with Chantelle would be a great idea, so after a bit of a wait at home for her to finish up with work, the three of us left and headed out to Gordon’s Bay beach.

Only… the wind had picked up a bit in the meantime, meaning that in the end we swapped out soft serve on the beach for ice cream in the safety of the Spur – which turned out perfectly fine as well!

And yes, once again I took many, many pictures at the beautiful Vergelegen Estate:

Breakfast at The Pool Room, Oak Valley in Elgin (2015-11-05) Photo Gallery 14 NOV 2015

So having enjoyed an unintended (but delicious) cup of Hot Chocolate at Fred & Max in Elgin, I suggested to a dejected Chantelle that perhaps we should wander over to the nearby Oak Valley Estate to see if their beautiful The Pool Room restaurant could maybe help us out in terms of a nice breakfast.

(We were on our way to Caledon for a bit of a mid-week break from work in case you are wondering.)

Situated in the picturesque and fertile Elgin, Oak Valley Estate is an old estate (established 1898), known these days for its multi-purpose functionality, namely its wines, flowers, meats, mountain bike trails, and now of course, restaurant.

The first thing that strikes you when you stop in the gravel parking lot in front of The Pool Room’s entrance is the sheer beauty of all the greenery around you. Lush lawns, plentiful trees… well, you get the picture.

The clean, spacious restaurant overlooks an elegantly shaped pool, with the water continuing that theme of tranquility which makes this such a special little dining spot.

Thankfully for Chantelle’s sake, The Pool Room does in fact have some delicious breakfast options available on their menu, and we enjoyed a thoroughly relaxed meal in an absolute perfect setting.

In other words, highly recommended as a fantastic breakfast stop! :)

Breakfast at Beulah on the R27 (2015-09-12) Photo Gallery 02 OCT 2015

A couple of weekends ago, we split the kids (one went to Granny, one went to Ouma), and after not the best of date night ever (couldn’t locate the restaurant we wanted to try, settled for mediocre, in the middle of a renovation, Spur, and then watched a mediocre Charlize Theron drama/thriller at Ster Kinekor),  we headed out bright and early on the Saturday morning, embarking on our whirlwind flowers on the West Coast adventure!

IMG_20150912_113833 Breakfast at Beulah restaurant on the R27

To start things off though, we needed breakfast, and following some good advice from Chantelle’s baking friends, we hunted down Beulah’s Farm Deli,  which stands alongside the R27 at the Yzerfontein/Darling crossing.

The exterior is… ‘charming’ in a rundown farm stall kind of way, but inside is where the real magic lies.

The tiny deli section of this vintage (but trendy modern) decorated farm stall is stocked with some exquisite farm products, a lot of these being meat (pork) related because Beulah also plays host Eighteen94 CureSmiths, experts in the age old charcuterie style of food preservation.

(This of course then translates to a lot of delicious pork/bacon making it onto Beulah’s delectable menu.)

The coffee is good, but believe me, the breakfast is even better. Well presented, full of flavour, and with a feel of being prepared by someone who loves food and is well trained/watches a lot of fancy cooking shows.

Needless to say, Chantelle and I left there  in absolute heaven, hunger sated and ready for the next step of our little breakaway journey!

She was right.
