How Gummy Bears are Made Science, Technology & Curiosity 16 AUG 2015

In case you skipped childhood and don’t know what a gummy bear is: “A gummy bear (which originated in Germany) is a small, fruit gum candy, similar to a jelly baby in some English-speaking countries. The candy is roughly 2 cm long and shaped in the form of a bear. The gummy bear is one of many gummies, popular gelatin-based candies sold in a variety of shapes and colors.”

Needless to say, as a kid, these things were awesome (and still are) to play with before gobbling up!

And now that we’re all grown up, it’s nice to know how gummy bears are actually made!

So, so much sugar.

Rick Hoberg: The Strangers #21 (1995) Comic Book Art | Comic Books 26 OCT 2011

I kind of enjoyed Malibu Comics’ Ultraverse line back in the 90’s, with The Strangers being just one of the varied titles available in this tightly knit continuity. As the story goes, 59 people were on a cable car when it was hit by an energy beam that would eventually come to be known at the “Jumpstart”. The survivors all gain a variety of super powers, and six of them, together with an ethereal woman from a hidden civilization, banded together to form the Strangers.

Issue 21 scripted by Steve Englehart with pencils from Paul Abrams and inks from Thomas Florimonte saw the unfortunate former pleasure android, now with the ability to generate electricity and a name change from Candy to Electrocute, ripped asunder as a grenade detonated under her car.

Of course, to sell comics one needs a great cover, and so enter the award winning Rick Hoberg who came up with this great piece of art depicting a rather stricken and lifeless Candy!
