Final Fight Cosplay: Poison (Nadyasonika) Cosplay 24 OCT 2014

Poison is a fictional character in the Final Fight and Street Fighter series of video games. Created by Akira Yasuda for Capcom, Poison first appeared in Final Fight alongside a similar character, Roxy, later appearing in Capcom-produced games, media and merchandise related to the Street Fighter franchise.

Originally conceived as a female thug in Final Fight and part of the game’s antagonist group, Mad Gear, concerns during the game’s development about reactions from North American audiences to fighting women, resulted in the character being re-imagined as a futanari. However, that was not considered satisfactory and both Poison and her palette swap Roxy were replaced by the male characters “Billy” and “Sid”, and have been for every subsequent North American port of the title on Nintendo consoles and handhelds.

After the Final Fight series she later appeared alongside wrestler Hugo, acting as his manager, with her schemes revolving around finding a tag team partner for him or developing their own wrestling organization. Poison was also to appear in both Capcom Fighting All-Stars and Final Fight: Streetwise; however, the former was canceled, and she was omitted from the latter as development progressed. Following those aborted attempts, she ended up appearing as a playable character on Street Fighter X Tekken. She was also added as a playable character to Ultra Street Fighter IV.

The character’s status as potentially transsexual, consciously left ambiguous by the developers, has remained a topic of frequent debate by both fans and media alike.

Pokémon Cosplay: Officer Jenny (Nadyasonika) Cosplay 01 AUG 2014

Mexican cosplayer Nadyasonika (also known as Nadya Anton to her mom) dips her toes into the incredibly popular Pokémon franchise, choosing to bring to life the ubiquitous Officer Jenny!

Officer Jenny is not a single entity. Rather, there are many Jennys working as police officers across the various regions of the Pokémon world.

Generally, Officer Jennys are brave and determined, but can be ineffective in their police duties. They fight against the likes of Team Rocket, Team Magma, Team Aqua and Team Galactic – among other miscellaneous criminals. Although there are many exceptions, Officer Jenny will generally have Growlithe to use as a police dog.

Although Jennys appear to be identical, there is some minor divergence among them, as evidenced by Brock. Brock is able to recognize different Jennys on numerous occasions; he appears to be the only character who can tell the Officer Jennys apart. The town/region where a certain Jenny comes from can be discerned by the symbol on their hats, which differs depending on location.

Officer Jenny made her debut in Pokémon Emergency. She was seen at the beginning of the episode warning the citizens of Viridian City of thieves in the area and to report suspicious-looking people immediately. Stopping Ash, who had his Pikachu in his arms, she suspected him of being a thief, but once she saw his Pokédex, she believed that he was a Pokémon Trainer, while also mentioning that three other Trainers had come through Viridian that day.

Using her motorcycle, she brought Ash to the Pokémon Center, and once Pikachu was in the hands of Nurse Joy, she left. After Team Rocket broke into the Pokémon Center, however, she made her way back, but appearing just in time to see the center exploding from a combination of Pikachu’s Thunder Shock and Koffing’s Smog attacks. She stayed and helped Nurse Joy through the morning, assuring her that Ash and Misty will have no trouble getting through the Viridian Forest.

League of Legends Cosplay: Jinx (Jenna Brockett) Cosplay 10 JUL 2014

New Zealand native Jenna Brockett describes herself as an artist, photographer and a bit of a hobbyist. Judging from the photo set below, she’s also pretty handy at bringing game characters to life. Meet Jinx of League of Legends fame.

P.S. Check out her DeviantArt page (where she goes under the name 2165-4561) for more of her talented work here.

Jinx lives to wreak havoc without a thought for consequence, leaving a trail of mayhem and panic in her wake. A manic and impulsive criminal, she despises nothing more than boredom, and gleefully unleashes her own volatile brand of pandemonium to the one place she finds dullest: Piltover. With an arsenal of deadly toys, she unleashes the brightest explosions and loudest blasts – all the better to shock and surprise the hapless authorities.

Always just out of the law’s reach, Jinx’s favorite game is to toy with Piltover’s finest – especially Vi.

As a playable character in League of Legends, Jinx’s strength as a marksman comes from her high scaling damage and ratios, ability to kite well with Flame Chompers! and Zap!, being able to finish off enemies with Super Mega Death Rocket!, and ability to continue the carnage (or disengage promptly) with Get Excited!.

Ikki Tousen Cosplay: Housen Ryofu (Kibashi) Cosplay 10 JUN 2014

Ikki Tousen made more of name for itself thanks to its penchant for short skirts, ripped clothing and ecchi situations that kept cropping up, instead of the great occasional fighting sequences and attached humour that went along with everything happening on screen.

Anyway, Japanese cosplayer Kibashi dips her toe into the Ikki Tousen (aka Battle Vixens) universe and comes back up bringing to life the alluringly dangerous fighter, Housen Ryofu!

Ikki Tousen Cosplay Housen Ryofu by japanese cosplayer kibashi 1

A strong bisexual fighter with a very promiscuous personality and a habit for dressing in skimpy outfits. She was very skilled at making chi blasts, and was in love with both Saji and her best friend Chinkyuu. She had a love-hate relationship with Saji, who she claims once raped her (Saji only half-denies this, claiming that she was not raped because she enjoyed it). Despite trying her best to escape her destiny, she ended up causing it anyway.

Afflicted with a deadly illness that would kill her before adulthood, she ended up being manipulated by Saji into causing Toutaku’s death. When she found out that Chinkyuu was raped, she went in search of revenge as her last living act. She was found by Kakouen, and the two fought each other. Kakouen’s skill added with Ryofu’s failing health was enough for Ryofu to be defeated. She was saved from Kakouen’s killing blow by Chinkyuu.

Realizing that she was moments away from dying, Ryofu and Chinkyuu then committed a double suicide, dying happily together as their predecessors did 1800 years before.

Vocaloid Cosplay: Hatsune Miku (Kibashi) Cosplay 10 JUN 2014

It’s absolutely insane how a singing synthesizer application with a female persona has managed to completely enthrall so many millions of fans across the world, so much so that ‘she’ is now even partaking in real life concerts – in digitized form of course!

Needless to say, we’re talking about Hatsune Miku, the vocaloid phenomenon that has spawned what is probably one of the most popular characters to cosplay for Japanese cosplayers – and it is no different for this week’s cosplayer, Kibashi, as she dons the famous blue wig!

Hatsune Miku is a singing synthesizer application with a female persona, developed by Crypton Future Media. It uses Yamaha Corporation’s Vocaloid 2 synthesizing technology. The name of the character comes from a fusion of the Japanese for first, sound, and future, referring to her position as the first of Crypton’s “Character Vocal Series”. She was the second Vocaloid to be sold using the Vocaloid 2 engine and the first Japanese Vocaloid to use the Japanese version of the Vocaloid 2 engine. Her voice is sampled from Japanese voice actress, Saki Fujita. Hatsune.

During Miku’s development, Crypton decided to take a different approach from that used by the other Vocaloid sound bank publishers. It was decided that to make the product successful not only would a highly appealing voice need to be developed, but that the voice needed an image. In this way, the target focus for Crypton’s Vocaloids changed from high-end music studios to the general public, specifically teenagers.

The task of coming up with Miku’s image went to the manga artist Kei Garo. When Kei designed Miku, his only direction was that she was an android and what her color scheme (based on Yamaha’s synthesizer’s signature cyan color) was. The design on Miku’s skirt and boots are based on synthesizer software colors and the bars represent the actual bars within the program’s user interface.

Crypton then officially created and posted Miku’s personal data sheet. However, this only contained her ‘physical’ and technical traits; Crypton did not provide much info in the way of Miku’s personality which has allowed song/music video creators and fans to associate the traits that they think suit her best.

Final Fantasy XII Cosplay: Fran (LittleBlondeGoth) Cosplay 07 JUN 2014

UK cosplayer Angel Martin, better known by her cosplay alias of LittleBlondeGoth, pulls out all the stops by grabbing her bow, strapping up, and bringing to life Final Fantasy XII’s fierce Viera warrior Fran for this excellent cosplay entry.

Final Fantasy XII Cosplay Fran by UK cosplayer angel martin aka littleblondegoth 1

Fran is a Viera warrior, mechanic to the Strahl, and Balthier’s copilot. Like all Viera, she is exceptionally sensitive to the magical Mist that permeates Ivalice, and is affected by it on three separate occasions: in the Tomb of Raithwall, when Judge Ghis heats the Dawn Shard in his airship’s engine, and when she is in the presence of the Sun-Cryst. When the party reaches Giruvegan, she can detect the Mist nearby has cooled and is less intense.

She also happens to be the oldest of all the Final Fantasy XII characters despite her youthful appearance, thanks to the longevity of the Viera people.

Fran once lived with her sisters Jote and Mjrn in Eruyt Village, the secluded Viera settlement in Golmore Jungle, but became restless and desired to see the outside world. This was a major source of conflict between her and the other viera, especially her elder sister Jote, who served as the village matriarch. Fran argued that although all Viera begin their lives in the forest, they are not necessarily bound to remain there to the end. When the party encounters an impassable Viera barrier on the path through Golmore, Fran is forced to return to the village and ask for help. She learns from Jote that their youngest sister Mjrn has run off to the nearby magicite mines. When Fran finds her and brings her back, Mjrn reveals she wishes to leave Golmore, but Fran advises her against doing so, relating how her own independence has cost her her family and the ability to commune with the Wood.

Fran accepts that she is now part of the Hume world, and asks for a confirmation from Jote that the Wood accepts her before she leaves. In Revenant Wings, Balthier and Fran are searching for the Cache of Glabados.

Fran was voiced by Nicole Fantl in English and by Rika Fukami in Japanese. She also appears in Itadaki Street Portable.

Final Fantasy VII Cosplay: Tifa Lockhart (Bunny Ayumi) Cosplay 07 JUN 2014

The popular Final Fantasy VII entry in the long running Final Fantasy franchise provides the inspiration for this cosplay outing by American cosplayer Natalie, perhaps better known as Bunny Ayumi. Grabbing her fighting mitts, Bunny Ayumi does a great job in bringing fan favourite Tifa Lockhart to life!

Final Fantasy VII Cosplay Tifa Lockhart by american cosplayer Bunny Ayumi 1

Tifa Lockhart is a player character in Square Enix’s role-playing video game Final Fantasy VII. Created by character designer Tetsuya Nomura, she has since appeared in the fighting game Ehrgeiz and cameo appearances in other titles, as well as the CGI film sequel to Final Fantasy VII, Advent Children and related games and media as part of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII series. As of Advent Children, Tifa is voiced by Ayumi Ito in Japanese, and by Rachael Leigh Cook in English.

A member of the terrorist group AVALANCHE and owner of the 7th Heaven bar, Tifa is the childhood friend of Cloud Strife, the protagonist of Final Fantasy VII. Convincing him to join the group to keep him close and safe, she later assists him in saving the planet from the game’s villain, Sephiroth. Elements of The Compilation of Final Fantasy VII later touched upon her character further, such as the film Advent Children in which she attempts to convince Cloud to let go of his self-imposed guilt and move on with his life after Sephiroth’s defeat.

Named the pin-up girl of the “cyber generation” by The New York Times, Tifa has been compared to Lara Croft as an example of a strong, independent and attractive female character in video games. Sources such as IGN and UGO.com have repeatedly praised both the character’s strength and appearance and described her as one of the best female characters in gaming, while Play named her the “most adored” of the Final Fantasy series’ female characters. In 2007, Dengeki PlayStation named her the eighth best fictional character all time to appear in games for the Sony PlayStation.

Dead or Alive (DOA) Cosplay: Kasumi (Bunny Ayumi) Cosplay 07 JUN 2014

The main character of the Dead or Alive (DOA) fighting game franchise since 1996 bursts into our cosplay feature this week, none other than the deadly Kasumi! (Brought to life here by the American cosplayer Natalie, aka Bunny Ayumi).

dead or alive doa cosplay kasumi by american cosplayer bunny ayumi 1

One of gaming’s foremost sex symbols, Kasumi also happens to be the personal favourite of Team Ninja’s founder and the series creator, Tomonobu Itagaki.

According to the game canon, Kasumi, also known as the Kunoichi of Destiny, is a teenage female shinobi (ninja) skilled in the Mugen style of ninjutsu. Selected as the 18th Master of the Mugen Tenshin ninja clan, Kasumi deserted her duties and entered the Dead or Alive tournament in order to defeat Raidou, the man who crippled her brother, in a revenge attack.

Although compassionate and not particularly at ease with violence and conflict most of the time, this highly skilled ninja is however not someone you wish to cross swords with, as she is quite simply, as deadly as she is beautiful!

In terms of gameplay, although altering slightly through the series’ various iterations, Kasumi is primarily a very balanced fighter with good speed, execution and fairly simplistic input commands, and is thus considered a mid-to-top tier character by most. Her range is however fairly lacking and her single strikes not particularly powerful, meaning she is best used as a pressure fighter, in other words constantly attacking without giving her opponent an opportunity to launch an attack.

Superman: The Animated Series Cosplay: Supergirl (Kitsune Dolly) Cosplay 05 JUN 2014

It is pretty much impossible to find anyone who grew up in the 90’s and doesn’t love Bruce Timm’s Superman: The Animated Series television run. Taking a page out of that particular book, American cosplayer Kitsune Dolly, powers up and brings to life Kara In-Ze – better known as Supergirl!

superman the animated series cosplay supergirl by american cosplayer kitsune dolly 1

Supergirl appears in Superman: The Animated Series voiced by Nicholle Tom. This version is based on the original Silver Age concept of Supergirl according to writer Paul Dini – “We wanted to do the original version, which is Superman’s cousin from Krypton; [however], we ran into a wall with DC because they insisted that Superman be the last Kryptonian. So we did a compromise: she’s from a small planet in the neighboring system that was colonized by Kryptonians, but they’ve evolved slightly differently.”.

She is depicted as Kara In-Ze, not Superman’s cousin as in the comic book but rather a near-Kryptonian from Krypton’s sister planet of Argo. She lives with the Kent family in Smallville, who tell others that she is Clark’s cousin.

Nicholle Tom reprises her role of Supergirl in Justice League Unlimited. As continued in this show, she and Superman have grown very close, almost like siblings. She joins the Justice League in “Initiation” and assists Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and Captain Atom in fighting a robot based on Brimstone which is attacking an Asian country. In “Far From Home,” Supergirl talks about how she wanted to be seen as more than just ‘Superman’s cousin’. She departs his company when she discovers love for Brainiac 5 of the Legion of Super-Heroes in the distant future.
