KFC: Keeping the Customers at Bay General Nonsense | My Life 16 JUL 2011

Ryan treated me to some KFC for supper before our final FIFA Foursome with Mr. Brown the other night (much appreciated of course), and our fast food outlet of choice was the KFC in Durban Road because a) it is right around the corner from Ryan’s pad, and b) because I don’t think the one in Tygervalley exists at the moment what with all their construction alterations.

Now I have been to a fair number of KFC outlets in the past, so it was quite a surprise to me that on entering this particular branch, I came face to face with a wire barrier placed over the top of the order counter so as to prevent me from leaning over and grabbing the employee behind the till on the other side – just in case they annoyed me.

Though I suppose thanks to it being in the ever popular night reveler spot of Edward Street and of course in a main street full of passing taxi traffic, that it is for this very reason that the barrier is up in the first place!

Note, it is actually pretty effective, though it does make it quite difficult to pass drinks through to the customer, resulting in some pretty hilarious moments. Also, the person dealing with drive-through orders has been moved to the side, isolated in an enclosed, locked little safe room.

Obviously Bellville/Durbanville is not a safe place for KFC employees any more!

Anyway, this sight was so foreign to me that I had to immediately embarrass Ryan by whipping out my phone and take in a snapshot, before of course generating this blog post.

Seriously, what I don’t all do just for the sake of you guys…

jQuery Text Area Character Counter CodeUnit 20 MAR 2010

Aaron Russell has gone and created a huge time saving jQuery plugin for us all to use in the form of his nifty jQuery Simply Countable plugin which basically provides a character counter for any text input or textarea box.

Using it is as simple as going

$(‘#my_textarea’).simplyCountable();

but it comes packed with loads of extra settings which allow you to specify the actual counter jQuery selector, what to actually count, how many of that thing to count and whether or not we can allow people to exceed the limit for example.

It comes released under both the MIT and GPL licenses and it is hosted on  GitHub, the home of social coding.

The following is a screenshot of it in action:

Note the counter at the bottom left of the image. Obviously you could style this to whatever you want.

Thanks Russell, a great little plugin that saved me some valuable time creating the same functionality from scratch! :)

No Water? More Dishes My Life 11 MAR 2010

So this Tuesday evening past Chantelle and I decided to skip going to the movies after all. Why you might ask? Well remember I mentioned previously that Gordon’s Bay had lost its water supply from early Sunday straight through to late Monday evening thanks to a burst water main? Well the impact this had on the household was horrendous – apart from Chantelle stealing our fridge-chilled water to fill the cistern so that we at least could flush, the worst impacted by this sudden lack of wet stuff was without a doubt our kitchen – as you can see from the pictures below.

Dishes literally piled up, starting with Saturday’s dishes (hey, who does dishes on a Saturday?) and then extending all the way through to Monday’s load, this is what our poor kitchen slowly became.

So in all fairness, it was the best decision to stay at home and try and tackle this pile (after my swim and supper of course) – though when I say we I mean me as Chantelle was already mysteriously passed out on the couch just as Flash Forward began… :P

No space left in the kitchen, the trail starts in the lounge already...

...moving on to the food preparation counter, it only got worse...

...to the counter space next to the basin!

Never mind the area next to the basin itself! O.O

Sigh, our mothers would be so ashamed of us…
