Mad as a Hatter at Inspired in Heidelberg (2019-09-30) Photo Gallery | Shopping 29 OCT 2019

Travelling down the N2, it is impossible not to smile when passing the colourful Inspired in Heidelberg, an Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter themed home decor shop that just screams “stop and see what we stock”!

So I finally did. The people at Inspired Creations specialize in manufacturing beautiful solid wood furniture and handmade decor items that are not “on the high street”. The brightly hued shop (which is housed in an old refurbished milk shed dating back to 1873) is packed with the most inventive and wonderful pieces of home decor, eager to turn a house into a home.

There is a lot of whimsy, artistry and craftmanship on display, and if you can’t quite make you mind up all at once, then you are welcome to have a cup of coffee, a delicious milkshake, or a yummy panini on their stoep.

Oh, and they have a selfie wall.

Burger and Chips at the Blue Crane Farm Shop in Heidelberg (2017-03-17) Farm Stalls | Photo Gallery 09 SEP 2017

Alongside the N2, lying just on the outskirts of Heidelberg (and conspicuous thanks to the bright blue roof), is the Blue Crane Farm Shop, a long time favourite with travellers tackling the long road between the Garden Route and Cape Town.

Home to a proper farm stall selling all kinds of home made goodies and baked treats, Blue Crane is also a small restaurant, serving a selection of simple but delicious foods – making it a great stop if your stomach is bugging you to take a break from your roadtrip.

Jessica and I stopped there for the very first time back in March this year, and we both loved the little treats on offer, colourful walls, and the superb mural decorating the wall of one of the main dining rooms.

Also, their blue cheese burger was rather nice! ;)

Great little spot to stop and stretch your legs if you don’t feel like the hustle and bustle that inevitably comes with pulling over in a town whilst on the N2.

Bonus: Seeing as we were on that road anyway, I decided to do an impromptu turn off at the now defunct (and ghost town feeling) bungee jump station at Gouritz River Bridge.

This was the first (and super popular) Bungee Jump station in South Africa, and operated for about 18 years, before shutting up shop for good in 2008 over safety concerns stemming from the rusted, crumbling infrastructure on which both the bungee and rope swinging operations depended on.

Coffee at Delish in Heidelberg (2017-01-04) Food and Drink | Photo Gallery 05 FEB 2017

It is hard to miss Delish as you whiz past Heidelberg on the N2 towards the Garden Route, thanks to the bright red shed (the wine shop), large signage and bright yellow sunflowers dotted all around.

The girls and I opted to stop and stretch our legs there on our way back from our delightful year end holiday in Gouritz, and we were pleasantly surprised with what we found.

At its heart, Delish is a restaurant that specialized in homemade goods such as wood-fired artisanal breads, pies, jams and sauces, catering for both the locals and those in a hurry/in need of a leg stretch stop along the N2. (Sunday lunch specials are a big hit apparently).

There are three places to sit down and eat something, namely inside the cosy little restaurant/farm stall, outside under the shaded deck, or out in the garden like what the girls and I picked on the particular morning. (Mind you, I didn’t really have a choice – the girls saw the little jungle gym when we parked!)

As I mentioned earlier, there is a good selection of wines to be bought from the dedicated red wine shed, whilst inside the restaurant there is a space filled with all manner of homemade treats on sale.

It’s a lovely, friendly space, and both the girls and I rather enjoyed our little impromptu stop – even if it was just for something small this time around!

Bonus: In 2015, the team behind Delish made a little video showcasing what they do:

Finally, just in case you need to picture it on a map:
