Kids Birthday Parties at Gan Eden Farm in Durbanville (2016-11-26) Photo Gallery 22 DEC 2016

By sheer chance, we discovered this great little kids party venue in Durbanville thanks to two of our friends independently deciding to host their child’s birthday there – meaning that in the space of a couple of weeks, Jess and Emily twice got to ride on a tractor trailer, feed the horses and grab an egg from a chicken!

First up was Logan’s dress-up party which the girls thoroughly enjoyed, followed a couple of weeks later by Lizzy’s birthday celebration.

Both Michelles (yes, both Logan and Lizzy’s moms are named Michelle) opted to have their kid’s party at Gumboot Parties which are based at Gan Eden farm in Durbanville (just past where the new Reddam school is being built).

They cater for the younger kids (that said, they do have an Amazing Race or Boeresport party offering for the older kids), with their farm party being held in a nice little closed off play area that has loads of jungle gym and play equipment scattered about, as well as a big tented area for the food/presents/adults.

The basic party package entitles the kids to a tractor ride (which they all love!), a chance to feed both the pigs and horses, as well as to collect a fresh hen’s egg from the chicken coop.

None of our kids grow up on a farm so of course this is great fun for them all, so needless to say, both parties were a big hit for both Jessica and Emily. (Although Emily wasn’t necessarily that comfortable around the big horses!)

Also, Logan’s party had a Piñata – and you can never go wrong with a Piñata.

A handy map for when your kid gets invited to a party there:

(Also, seeing as you are in the area anyway, you might want to pop in to the new Xpresso takeaway coffee shop in Durbanville – their gimmick is that absolutely everything in the shop is priced at R10! Even more amazing is that even at that price point, the coffee and pastries are actually very good!)

Horse-drawn Carriage Ride at Klein Joostenberg in Stellenbosch (2016-08-27) Photo Gallery | Travel Attractions 10 SEP 2016

I have already mentioned our morning spent frolicking on the lawns and eating from the deli at Klein Joostenberg the other day, but what I haven’t yet mentioned is the actual reason that the girls and I were there in the first place.

A cart horse.

dav

I remembered that a couple of years back, you used to be able to purchase short little rides on a horse-drawn cart. Whether or not this was still the case, I didn’t know, but nevertheless, I was pretty sure that this would be something of a little adventure that both girls might enjoy.

dav

As it turns out, the rickety old carriage is still very much there, and for a fee of R15 per passenger, you get a short ride past the pond, into a small glen of trees and then back the way you came.

(Oh, and the guys operating it now also have a standalone horse there, so if your kids prefer riding on an actual horse as opposed to just enjoying a cart ride – well, you’re sorted).

Emily wasn’t quite convinced that this was totally a fun idea in the beginning, so she remained seated on my lap for the journey (but did eventually get rather into it!). Jessica on the other hand was super excited and loved every minute of it – going even so far to “thank the nice horsie” at the end!)

So yes, definitely a pleasant morning distraction!

Pizza at Wild Clover (2015-08-23) Photo Gallery 25 AUG 2015

With Chantelle now back in the fold, last Sunday saw us braving the now overcast and slightly damp weather (a surprise given that Saturday was such a hot day) with a drive out to Wild Clover, a fantastic spot on a farm that features a indoor/outdoor restaurant, large kids play area, small farmyard, archery butts, model aircraft flying zone, farmer’s market, accommodation, wedding venue, and even a small brewery!

We opted to sit under the roof with the gas heaters turned up high, while Jessica ran around outside and Emily busied herself playing in the drainage chips keeping the floor dry.

The atmosphere was good as always, the music pleasant, and pleasingly, the pizzas that we ordered were divine! (I had some of the local brewery’s ale as well – sadly though, I didn’t enjoy that quite so much).

Following a pleasant lunch, we strolled around the area for a bit, and were treated to quite a nice encounter with a pair of horses and their foal.

After the dad checked us out and made sure that we weren’t a threat, the mother and foal decided it okay to approach, and needless to say, Jess was quite thrilled at seeing these magnificent beasts up so close and personal!

(Plus, the foal was thoroughly entertaining, prancing and running around to its heart’s content!)

Emily on the other hand wasn’t quite as thrilled with all this farmyard activity – especially when it came to the noisy (but oh so cute) piglets running around!

What a treat of a Sunday afternoon!

Photo Gallery: Picnic and a Horse Cart Ride at Klein Joostenberg (2013-12-29) Photo Gallery 29 DEC 2013

We popped out for an impromptu picnic on the Klein Joostenberg grounds, where we tucked into some delicious deli offerings, rolled around on the grass, played on the swings and slides, and even took a ride on the horse cart!

(And by we I mean Jessica and myself. Heavily pregnant Chantelle was far more content with taking a meaningful nap on the grass…)

Joke Factory: Blonde Riding a Horse Jokes & other Funny Stuff 16 SEP 2011

A blonde decides to try horseback riding, even though she has had no lessons, nor prior experience.

She mounts the horse unassisted, and the horse immediately springs into motion. It gallops along at a steady and rhythmic pace, but the inexperienced blonde begins to slide from the saddle.

In terror, she grabs for the horse’s mane, but cannot seem to get a firm grip. She tries to throw her arms around the horse’s neck, but she slides down the horse’s side anyway. The horse gallops along, seemingly impervious to its slipping rider.

Finally, giving up her frail grip, the blonde attempts to leap away from the horse and throw herself to safety. Unfortunately, her foot has become entangled in the stirrup, she is now at the mercy of the horse’s pounding hooves as her head is struck against the ground, over and over again.

As her head is battered against the ground, she is mere moments away from unconsciousness when to her great fortune… Frank, the Walmart greeter, sees her dilemma and unplugs the horse.

And you thought all they did was say Hello.

Joke Factory: Riding Tall Jokes & other Funny Stuff 27 MAY 2011

A group of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, accompanied by two female teachers, went on a field trip to the local racetrack to learn about thoroughbred horses and the supporting industry – but mostly to see the horses of course!

When it was time to take the children to the bathroom, it was decided that the girls would go with one teacher and the boys would go with the other. The teacher assigned to the boys was waiting outside the men’s room when one of the boys came out and told her that none of them could reach the urinal.

Having no other real option available to her, she went inside, helped the boys with their pants, and began hoisting the little boys up one by one, holding on to their ‘wee-wees’ to direct the flow away from their clothes.

As she lifted the final one, she couldn’t help but notice that he was unusually well endowed. Trying not to show that she was staring, the teacher said, “You must be in the 5th grade.”

“No, ma’am”, he replied.

“I’m riding Bold Silvano in the seventh race, but I do appreciate your help.”
