December Holiday Family Fun in Mossel Bay (2018-12-29) Photo Gallery | Travel Attractions 03 OCT 2019

So the last term of school has just kicked off, meaning that we are now happily barreling towards the end of the year again. I’m not entirely sure what we’ll end up doing for the holidays this time around, but last year certainly saw us repeat what has become a bit of a tradition over the last couple of years – i.e. spend a chunk of the December school holidays with family on Pinnacle Point Estate in Mossel Bay.

Having now well established that December in the Mossel Bay/Hartenbos area is absolute chaos because of the hordes of people that make their way down to this popular coastal resort town for the holidays, we much better tailored our holiday expectations and managed to miss pretty much all of the crowds.

That’s not to say we just stayed in the estate and didn’t have any fun. Besides the swimming, exploring and enjoying of the natural fynbos beauty of Pinnacle Point, we also indulged in plenty of ice-cream fuelled strolls at The Point and Cape St. Blaize Cave in Mossel Bay, silly fun at Tuinplaas in Albertinia, cotton candy and wine at Jakkelsvlei near Herbertsdale, a walk through the ferns and forest in the Garden of Eden outside Knysna, fresh farm produce at Wild Oats market in Sedgefield, coffee and sliders at Getafix in George, and of course marvelled at the lions and jaguars of Jukani and the pigeons and parrots of the Birds of Eden at The Crags near Plettenberg Bay.

We tucked into donuts in Hartenbos, ambled down the beach in Dana Bay, took a bite at the Nibbling Squirrel in Riversdale, enjoyed refreshments at Pure Craft & Foods in George, admired the lagoon and Heads of Knysna, watched the sunset in Buffalo Bay, and sipped on milkshakes from Milk & Sugar in Buffeljagsrivier.

My mom and dad, my sister and her family, Chantelle’s mom and dad (who were also holidaying in the region) – in other words a proper big family December holiday experience!

A December Holiday in Pinnacle Point Mossel Bay (2017-12-26) Photo Gallery | Travel Attractions 11 FEB 2019

Last year we spent some holiday time up with the family at Pinnacle Point Estate in Mossel Bay. Two years ago we did the same (though on a slightly shorter scale because we also spent some time in Gouritsmond).

Two years ago the holiday was filled with swimming, walks on the beach, rides on the golf cart, playing Jenga, and doing our best to avoid the massive crowds that descend upon the area for the Christmas break. (We were not successful).

Oh, and gingerbread houses. Lots of gingerbread houses.

Sand and Waves at Oyster Bay Reserve Beach in Mossel Bay (2017-03-18) Photo Gallery | Travel Attractions 09 AUG 2017

On the outskirts of Mossel Bay, tucked between the residential townships of Dana Bay, Kwa Nonquaba, Pinnacle Point and Heiderand, is the Oyster Bay Reserve, a 330 hectare botanical nature reserve.

Established with the intention to conserve, preserve and educate through a variety of community projects, the Oyster Bay Reserve is also home to a number of hiking trails, the most famous of those running through it being of course the St Blaize Hiking Trail, the 13.5  kilometer long trail that stretches from the St Blaize Lighthouse (Mossel Bay) all the way through to Dana Bay.

The Pinnacle Point Estate (my dad has a fractional ownership in one of the gorgeous houses there) has direct access to the tiny, tucked away Oyster Bay Beach (complete with a 24 hour guard station), a sliver of friendly sand in between the otherwise rugged (and often misty) coastline.

Accessible via golf cart (as is pretty much everything else in Pinnacle Point), this quiet, unspoiled little bit of sand is the perfect escape if you have little kids, and want to avoid the often more busy beaches that come along with a drive through to Mossel Bay.

Jessica and I joined my mom and dad for a long weekend away at their place in Pinnacle Point back in March this year, and of course, play time in the sand with Grandpa and Daddy was very much in demand from my little girl.

(And yes, as always, Jessica remains terrified of the actual sea – meaning that when it came to building a moat around our sandcastle, fetching buckets of water was very much left in dad’s and my domain!)

A tiny, hidden little gem then.
