The enigmatic Rei Ayanami, one of the mysterious First Children and pilot of Evangelion Unit-00, is a silent and socially withdrawn girl, displaying no lust for life or passion in her actions. Fiercely loyal to Nerv’s leader Gendo Ikari, Rei knows her expendable nature and has no problem throwing herself into battle despite the possible danger and risk to her self.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Cosplay: Asuka Langley Soryu (Hiromichi) Cosplay 13 AUG 2012

Today’s cosplay entry takes a character from the hugely popular, original run of Neon Genesis Evangelion, in the form of Asuka Langley Soryu, brought to life, plugsuit and all, by the demure Japanese cosplayer, Hiromichi.

Asuka is first introduced into the series in episode 8, with the arrival of Eva Unit 02 and the battle with the Angel Gaghiel. Asuka is shown as maintaining a high synchronization ratio and exceptional skills as an Eva pilot, being very aggressive and confident in battle. After first being defeated in battle by Zeruel, Asuka’s self-confidence (and, correspondingly, her synch ratio and effectiveness as a pilot) begins to dwindle. This comes to a head in episode 22, when Arael appears and Asuka, burdened by increasingly poor results in synchronization tests, is infuriated by being ordered to serve as backup to Rei. She defies orders and tries to attack the Angel alone, but is overwhelmed by a psychological attack by the Angel, forcing her to relive her painful memories and resulting in a mental breakdown.

She becomes incapable of piloting Unit 02, and since piloting Eva is the meaning of her life, Asuka loses the will to live and spends much of the final episodes of the television series in a hospital bed in a catatonic state.

Asuka’s surname comes from the Japanese World War II aircraft carrier Soryu, her German surname from the American World War II aircraft carrier Langley. Her first name comes from Asuka Saki, who is the main character of the Japanese comic, SuperGirl Asuka written by Shinji Wada.

Character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto explained that he “first designed an Asuka-type girl as the lead character” but felt it might be too similar to previous anime that he and Anno had worked on, such as Gunbuster and Nadia. He suggested to Anno that they change the lead character to a boy, which would be more in keeping with the robot genre.

Evangelion 2.0 Cosplay: Asuka Langley Shikinami (Ushijima Iiniku) Cosplay 25 NOV 2011

Ushijima Iiniku (loosely translated, “Good Meat”) is a rather well known ero-cosplayer who specialises in putting together some rather titillating costumes and then putting them on display using her pretty good body to full effect. Needless to say, Asuka’s new test plugsuit introduced in the second Rebuild of Evangelion movie, Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance was too good an opportunity for her to miss showing off!

Needless to say, Asuka’s new test plugsuit introduced in the second Rebuild of Evangelion movie, Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance was too good an opportunity for her to miss showing off!

Originally Asuka Langley Soryu in the classic Neon Genesis Evangelion television show, this over-confident, loud and slighly obnoxious young Evanglion female pilot was re-introduced in the Rebuild of Evangelion project that seeks to re-make the series into an even truer vision of Hideaki Anno’s legendary anime.

Her family name now changed to Shikinami, this time around Asuka is referred to as holding the rank of captain. She is also no longer infatuated with Kaji and instead of Toji, who died in the original, she test pilots Unit-3 and in addition, survives the Bardiel incident.

Other than that, she still looks good in a plugsuit, even if it is only a test plugsuit.
