Things to See in Russia: The Motherland Calls Giant Statue Travel Attractions 22 JAN 2015

The Motherland Calls, or The Mamayev Monument, is a statue in Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd, Russia, commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad. It was designed by sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and structural engineer Nikolai Nikitin, and declared the largest statue in the world in 1967.

Compared with the later higher statues, The Motherland Calls is significantly more complex from an engineering point of view, due to its characteristic posture with a sword raised high in the right hand and the left hand extended in a calling gesture. The technology behind the statue is based on a combination of pre-stressed concrete (7,900 tonnes) with wire ropes structure, a solution which can be found also in another work of Nikitin’s, the super-tall Ostankino Tower in Moscow.

It is the tallest statue of a woman in the world.

When the memorial was dedicated in 1967 it was the tallest sculpture in the world, measuring 87 metres from the tip of its sword to the top of the plinth. The figure itself measures 52 metres, and the sword 33 metres.

Two hundred steps, symbolizing the 200 days of the Battle of Stalingrad, led from the bottom of the hill to the monument. The statue appears on both the current flag and coat of arms of Volgograd Oblast.

Ikki Tousen Cosplay: Housen Ryofu (Kibashi) Cosplay 10 JUN 2014

Ikki Tousen made more of name for itself thanks to its penchant for short skirts, ripped clothing and ecchi situations that kept cropping up, instead of the great occasional fighting sequences and attached humour that went along with everything happening on screen.

Anyway, Japanese cosplayer Kibashi dips her toe into the Ikki Tousen (aka Battle Vixens) universe and comes back up bringing to life the alluringly dangerous fighter, Housen Ryofu!

Ikki Tousen Cosplay Housen Ryofu by japanese cosplayer kibashi 1

A strong bisexual fighter with a very promiscuous personality and a habit for dressing in skimpy outfits. She was very skilled at making chi blasts, and was in love with both Saji and her best friend Chinkyuu. She had a love-hate relationship with Saji, who she claims once raped her (Saji only half-denies this, claiming that she was not raped because she enjoyed it). Despite trying her best to escape her destiny, she ended up causing it anyway.

Afflicted with a deadly illness that would kill her before adulthood, she ended up being manipulated by Saji into causing Toutaku’s death. When she found out that Chinkyuu was raped, she went in search of revenge as her last living act. She was found by Kakouen, and the two fought each other. Kakouen’s skill added with Ryofu’s failing health was enough for Ryofu to be defeated. She was saved from Kakouen’s killing blow by Chinkyuu.

Realizing that she was moments away from dying, Ryofu and Chinkyuu then committed a double suicide, dying happily together as their predecessors did 1800 years before.

Skarlet is an intense warrior created by Shao Kahn using sorcery and the blood of countless warriors, and is only ever released as a last resort. Her sole purpose is to discover Quan Chi’s true reason for attendance at the Mortal Kombat tournament.

Skarlet originated as a rumored character in Mortal Kombat II. During the game when choosing Kitana and Mileena, the palette swap would turn to red instead of blue (Kitana) or purple (Mileena) and so create an unnamed red female ninja. Netherrealm Studios confirmed that the name of the character had been decided to be Skarlet, and in March 2011 she was announced as one of Mortal Kombat’s first two downloadable characters.

She uses kodachi swords and kunai knives.

Lady Death Cosplay: Lady Death (Belle Chere) Cosplay 24 NOV 2013

Although Lady Death started out as little more than eye-candy for the Evil Ernie, she has since gone on to be one of the premier bad girl heroines in comic book history.

American cosplayer Belle Chere tackles the task of bringing to life this sexy, sword swinging bad girl with a lot of gusto – as you can see for yourself in these shots!

There are at least three very distinct versions of Lady Death, all carrying very different origin stories, courtesy of the character’s convoluted publishing history thanks to the character rights switching hands ever so often.

Classic Lady Death sees a girl named Hope escape being burned at the stake after mistakenly being labeled a witch, ending up in Hell thanks to a misguided bargain struck with a demon she inadvertently summoned while attempting to escape.

Once in Hell, Hope became entangled in a civil war that was raging between Lucifer and an army of renegade devils led by a powerful sorcerer. Hope was devastated when she learned that the ambitious sorcerer challenging Lucifer for the control of Hell was her own father.

Gradually corrupted by the nature of her surrounding, Hope was tainted with evil. She allied herself with an exiled craftsman who forged weapons for the infernal armies. While speaking to him, she declared that the innocent woman she had once been was dead and that she would henceforth only be known as Lady Death.

In her new persona, Lady Death led an uprising against the Lords of Hell. During the final battle, Lucifer cursed her never to return to Earth while the living walked. Lady Death swore an oath that she would circumvent Lucifer’s curse by exterminating all life on Earth.

Lady Death finally ended Lucifer’s control over her by casting him through Heaven’s Gate (a place where evil cannot go), and in doing so became the new ruler of Hell. Many of the beings living in hell believe that the ascension of Lady Death signaled the beginning of the age of judgment – the final battle between good and evil for the fate of the Earth.

Shakugan no Shana Cosplay: Shana (Yuki Mashiro) Cosplay 03 NOV 2013

Today’s cosplay entry borrows a character from Yashichiro Takahashi’s successfull light novel series (and anime adaptation), Shakugan no Shana, played out by the rather talented Japanese cosplayer: Yuki Mashiro!

In the never-ending battle to ensure balance in this world, Shakugan no Shana’s Shana technically bears no name and is only interested in one thing – slicing up anything that would effect the balance. Befriending by a Torch unlike any other, Yuji Sakai, Shana is gifted the name mainly because a) it gives Yuji something to call her and b) it is better than being called by her full title which is Flame-Haired Blazing-Eyed Hunter.

She is what is called a Flame Haze and wields a nodachi named Nietono no Shana. Although not human, she does seem to carry many of their traits, and as her relationship with the Torch named Yuji deepens, so she as a character further evolves.

Oh, and she has a disturbing love for all things melon bread.

Red Sonja Cosplay: Red Sonja (Belle Chere) Cosplay 15 SEP 2013

The sword-slinging she-devil that is Red Sonja, gets a fantastic cosplay effort here courtesy of American cosplayer Belle Chere, who doesn’t seem to mind the cold all that much!

Red Sonja, the She-Devil with a Sword, is a fictional character, a high fantasy sword and sorcery heroine created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, and loosely based on Red Sonya of Rogatino in Robert E. Howard’s 1934 short story “The Shadow of the Vulture”. She first appeared in the Marvel Comics book Conan the Barbarian #23 (February 1973).

After the murder of her family and her rape by a Mercenary group, Sonja’s cries of revenge were answered by the red goddess Scáthach, who appeared to her and instilled within her incredible skill in terms of the handling of swords and other weapons of war, on the condition that she would never lie with a man unless he defeated her in fair combat.

This revenge-driven warrior has since become the archetypical example of the fantasy female barbarian, being fierce and stunningly beautiful, and wearing armour that resembles either a bikini or lingerie.

We can all thank artists Esteban Maroto and Boris Vallejo for that, now can’t we? ;)

soulcalibur iv cosplay cassandra by spanish cosplayer ivettepuig 1

Cassandra Alexandra is the younger sister of series character Sophitia, and in Soulcalibur II set out on her own to destroy the cursed sword Soul Edge, continuing her quest in Soulcalibur III after realizing the sword still existed. She returns in Soulcalibur IV, encountering a man who sensed the fragment of Soul Edge that she carried. After defeating him, he fled, but told her of a “holy stone” with the power to dispel evil. Hearing rumors of a man with a large mass of crystal (Siegfried) on his way to Ostrheinsburg, she reasoned he carried the “Holy Stone” and sought to destroy Soul Edge, and followed him.

Cassandra was designed in mind to have greater determination than Sophitia, with greater physical abilities and skills. Unlike her sister whose skills originate from her weapons and Hephaestus, Cassandra is not as humble and cannot hear him, relying instead on her own strength.
