Lunch at Skilpadvlei Wine Estate in Stellenbosch (2016-10-20) Photo Gallery | Restaurants 25 FEB 2017

Way back in October last year, on a beautiful and windless Thursday afternoon, Chantelle and I picked the girls up from their respective playschools and headed out towards the Stellenbosch winelands, making our way to the super popular Polkadraai Strawberry Farm for an enjoyable strawberry picking session. (Midweek, because that place is far too busy on a weekend come strawberry picking season!)

Anyway, following our romp in the strawberries (which the girls absolutely loved), we decided to round off the outing with some lunch, and so we did a u-turn and headed back down the road to the nearby Skilpadvlei Wine Estate, known for its local wine, accommodation options, its use as a beautiful wedding venue, and if you have small kids, it’s impressively large wooden jungle gym!

Whilst the inside of the restaurant is always a nice and quirky affair, we almost always sit outside to take in the tranquil vineyard views, and this day was certainly no different. With the place almost entirely to ourselves, we enjoyed a great lunch, with the girls wolfing down their food as fast as possible in order to maximize their play time in Skilpadvlei’s great kids play area.

Not that I was complaining mind you… ;)

Oh, and in case you are wondering about the rather unusual/charming name of this wine estate, i.e. Tortoise Marsh in English (admittedly, perhaps not the best translation), it stems from the large colony of tortoises who purportedly called the vlei home in the 1800’s.

The estate has notably been in the hands of the Joubert family since 1917, with the fully operational 78ha farm being primarily made up of 55ha of vineyards, 3ha of olive groves, and of course the rest seemingly being taken up by that jungle gym of theirs…

Also, I did my best to annoy Chantelle with my camera phone as much as I could on the day:

So, in summary, a good family stop (as always) for us.

Bonus: a handy map so that your kids can bug you to head out that way as well:

Kidz Corner Indoor Play Center in Strand (2016-04-02) Photo Gallery 19 APR 2016

A nice surprise was the relatively recent opening of Kidz Corner in Strand (near the Gantz Center), an indoor play and party center for children – in other words, a great option for when the weather is perhaps not so great and you need your kids to burn off some of that excess energy!

The small factory space is dominated by a giant, three story, mesh protected jungle gym, fitted out with a variety of obstacles and ended off with some fun slides that deliver the kids into a big ball pit.

There’s also a jumping castle and trampoline, and loads of freestanding toys like hula hoops and balls.

There is always someone keeping an eye on the kids, and all in all, the brightly coloured Kidz Corner is perfect for the little ones.

There are a few tables set out for the parents, and you can order some coffee, cake and snacks for you and the kids – most likely sourced from the nearby Smiling Oven. Kidz Corner also hosts kids birthday parties, but seeing as we only visited them for a play session, I can’t quite comment on that.

The girls had an absolute blast and were completely knackered that evening, so I’m pretty sure we’ll be paying Kidz Corner plenty of visits this upcoming winter!

Play Time at Mondeor Restaurant (2015-03-15) Photo Gallery 23 MAR 2015

Although I’ve already mentioned our play time trip for coffee and cake with Monty, Cheryl and Chantelle at Mondeor Restaurant the Sunday before last, I thought it a good idea to post some more photos of the relaxing afternoon out – after all, it isn’t every day that I can get Emily and Jessica on the trampoline at the same time!

Cake, coffee, milkshake, beer, and lots of things for the kids to clamber on, what more could you ask for? :)

Grayson’s 1st Birthday Party (2015-01-10) Photo Gallery 11 JAN 2015

Yesterday Chantelle, Jess, Emily and I found ourselves making the trip through to Constantia in order to join up with the Carpenter Clan in order to celebrate Grayson’s 1st birthday. (Incredibly enough, today we’re actually out celebrating Emily’s first birthday – what a weekend for 1st birthday parties, eh?)

Although we again missed the street we needed to turn down in getting to Claire and Riley’s house, we were actually – amazingly – pretty much on time (in fact, it was almost satisfying to see a host of cars pull up just as I switched the Accent off).

Despite the fact that we were experiencing a gloriously sunny day back in Gordon’s Bay, here under the mountain things were certainly a lot more cloudy, but nevertheless, the weather played in everyone’s favour as it was warm enough to lounge outside without being so hot that everyone fried.

Chantelle and Riley had prepared a magnificent spread of finger foods, the children were all having a ball on the trampoline (Jess included), and what followed was a relaxing, enjoyable day out for all Claire and Riley’s family and friends (plus Rocky).

So a great start to what I’m sure will be many awesome parties to follow for young Grayson then – whom I’m sure should by his next birthday be putting out the candle by blowing on it instead of just grabbing it with his hand! :)

Bonus! Seeing as both Ryan and Grandpa had ventured on the trampoline, Chantelle wasn’t prepared to be left behind:

A Duo of Weekend Updates My Life 04 MAR 2013

Monday and thus the start of what is sure to be another week of hard code development, thanks to all the shit I have to deal with at work at the moment thanks to some ineptitudes displayed by my former colleagues. Never mind that though, I have in fact enjoyed two rather nice weekends in a row now, the first being our fun getaway with the Lotter Clan to Pinnacle Point in Mossel Bay two weekends ago, followed by the weekend just past which was little more than a weekend of pure rest and relaxation!

As for our Pinnacle Point weekend, we joined up with Mom, Dad, Ryan, Claire and little Devon on the Saturday afternoon and stayed until Tuesday afternoon, meaning that it was a good and proper little getaway from home. Of course, this didn’t help Chantelle’s cause much because on her return she was pretty much chained to the kitchen for the new couple of nights playing catch-up, but for Jess and me it was an absolute blast. Plenty of swimming and road trips to George and Mossel Bay were had, lots of good food was consumed, Jessica finally got acquainted with a proper trampoline, and we even squeezed in a birthday lunch with my Mom in Mossel Bay harbour on the Tuesday afternoon before we left!

As for this weekend it was really a weekend of lazing about and doing as little as possible. Probably the only thing we did achieve on Saturday was to go out and do paint shopping in preparation of our house being painted this week (turned out to be a rather quick decision in terms of what colour to go for), as well as some on the spur of the moment DIY as I finally got around to putting up key hangers everywhere! Sunday was a slightly more productive day in that we drove through to Bellville in order to tuck into a properly delicious pork roast lunch with the Montgomery Clan, not to mention drool at the simple but delicious dessert that followed up such a succulent main!

Unfortunately the T20 Proteas versus Pakistan game was a disaster for us South Africans, I was well and truly beaten by Rob at the dart board, and let’s not mention my poor run in this year’s Super Rugby Superbru tournament, but at least I did get something going my way in that I finally managed to find a new pair of shorts to fit me, not to mention this awesome building brick tipper truck present I got for Jess – which proved to be an absolute hit! :)

So yup, had two enjoyable weekends in a row, meaning that I’m now refreshed and ready to tackle this pile of steaming turd which passes off as a project in desperate need of saving here at work. Sigh…

Photo Gallery: Mossel Bay Weekend Away (2013-02-23) Photo Gallery 23 FEB 2013

My folks invited Chantelle, Jess and myself to join them for a Lotter Clan weekend away at Pinnacle Point, and seeing as the three of us haven’t been away together in who knows how long, we jumped at the opportunity! We left Gordon’s Bay on the Saturday morning, only to return on Tuesday afternoon, meaning that the three of us enjoyed a well and truly proper little break of rest and relaxation.

As you can imagine with weather as good as what it was for the duration of our stay, naturally there was plenty of swimming to be had, not to mention trips out to Mossel Bay and George (soft serve ice cream for the win!), plenty of good food on offer, and we even managed to squeeze in a delicious birthday lunch at the Mossel Bay harbour in celebration of my mom’s birthday!

Oh, and Jessica got her first taste of a trampoline as well.
