Use Trash? WordPress 2.9.2 Upgrade Time Then! CodeUnit 17 FEB 2010

Do you make use of the nifty little trash feature recently introduced in WordPress 2.9 that allows you to “delete” or “trash” posts to a recycle bin from which you can then choose to permanently delete or restore at a later date?

Well if the answer is yes then it is probably a good idea to quickly update your installation version to the newly released 2.9.2 version in order to protect yourself against a nasty little bug introduced with this great new bit of functionality!

The problem is that in introducing this new core bit of functionality, developers somehow forgot to properly integrate it within WordPress’ security framework and as such were left with a situation whereby any authenticated user, no matter what rights they have (e.g. they could even be a simple subscriber), can access the trash of any other user – meaning that if you have any sensitive posts that you previously trashed, they would have in fact still pretty much been open for anyone to see.

If you still aren’t on the same page with me as to why you need to upgrade to this patched version ASAP, let me put it to you a little differently. Let us say for example you work for a boss, but being a disgruntled employee, you type up a post on the company blog revealing to the world all the naughty kinkiness you got up to your boss’ daughter. Thankfully though, a moment of sanity prevailed and you trashed the post before publishing it, so it never saw the light of day – whew! However, if the bug was still active and your boss entered the blog to add a new post or such, he would be able to read what you had previously trashed and make no doubt about it – you would now be standing out there in the cold in the unemployment line.

So do yourself a favour. Upgrade to WordPress 2.9.2 today! :)

Tiger Claw Clean My Life 12 JAN 2010

Man, what a spring-cleaning drive Chantelle and I have been on as of late! Determined to at last clear up some much needed space in our home pad, Chantelle has been like a tiger set loose upon a big juicy hunk of meat!

Clothes have been flying left, right and center, draws have been opened and shut at astonishing rates, entire cupboards have been emptied and now even our entire collection of Tupperware have found themselves strewn around the kitchen with unbridled abandon. As for the office, paper, old photos and postcards litter the floor as I tear into our entire filing system, compressing, discarding and punching cute little holes in important pieces of paper. The unnecessary has been tossed and slowly but surely space crawls towards us once more.

Already I have made the daunting trip to the outside trash area more times than what I can remember, heaving black bag after black bag of discarded items and junk onto the pile, and after Chantelle’s and my concerted effort, Gaylord from the lodge now gets to profit by at least two black bags filled to the brim with discarded clothes and accessories!

This job has long since been overdue, and is taking far longer than what we ever could have imagined, but I won’t lie, it feels good. It feels good to get rid of all that stuff you’ve so meticulously hoarded over the years, like that clipboard you got in Standard 2 (Grade 4 for all you younger readers out there), that cycling helmet which hasn’t been outside of that box in your cupboard since you hung up your cycling shorts all those years ago and that soccerball that has yet to see the light of day, never mind the cool caress of a pump in order to bring it to its full potential.

It is good.

And soon the tiger shall be sated.

You Piece of Trash! General Nonsense | My Life 12 JAN 2008

You piece of rubbish! If I ever find out who you are then I’m going to take a paintbrush to your door and colour it a lovely shade of pink and yellow! Worse even, I’m going to add polka dots too!

I woke up this morning and set about on the unenviable task of cleaning up the mess left over since Thursday night’s party (I had way too much to drink to attempt the cleanup yesterday you see!). My trash bin full of bits and pieces of this and that, I meticulously emptied it and stepped outside just to leave it there while I generate the next load to go down.

And lo and behold, there sits another large black bag full of rubbish, sitting squarely in front of my flat. Quite inauspiciously yes, but most definitely in front of my flat. The bastard! Some bloody idiot had decided that a) it is too much effort to carry their refuse down to the big trash container on the premises and b) it didn’t look or smell particularly nice in front of their own flat. So as all good neighbours do, c) they sneaked to my flat and dumped in front of mine.

Obviously they thought that this wouldn’t bother me in the slightest or perhaps that they were in some cosmic way doing me some sort of favour. Luckily for them I don’t keep rubber gloves here or else I may very well have done some trash sifting of my own for some identity theft fun.

Oh well, guess all I can do is complain or set up a surveillance camera. Guess I’ll go with the complaining option then!
