High Tea at the Belmond Mount Nelson in Cape Town (2017-11-07) Photo Gallery | Travel Attractions 09 JAN 2018

On the 7th of November last year, Chantelle and I celebrated eight years of marriage to one another. To commemorate this special occasion, we decided to head out to Cape Town for High Tea at city’s famous Pink Lady: the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel.

With its name taking inspiration from Cape Town’s Table Mountain and the fame of Lord Horatio Nelson, the historic Mount Nelson Hotel (now owned by the Belmond group) first opened its doors on the 6th of March 1899. It was the first hotel in South Africa to offer hot and cold running water, and it was described back then as being ‘even better than its London counterparts’.

Today this five star luxury hotel, complete with gardens, restaurants, a spa and a host of other amenities, holds on to its status of being a place of accommodation that achieves that perfect mix of tranquility and class in the middle of a bustling urban environment.

(To be honest, I kind of have to believe what they say – this place definitely does amaze when it comes to first impressions!)

For Chantelle of course, afternoon tea (or high tea as it is otherwise known) at the Mount Nelson is old hat – she’s done it more than a few times in the past, but for me it was definitely a first.

And admittedly, I have to say that I rather enjoyed the experience.

For a start, the newly renovated tea room is now light and airy, apparently very different to the darker, more reserved space Chantelle has previously experienced.

The setup is simple enough: you get shown to your table, you get assigned a tea sommelier (or a waiter if you’re unlucky), get a stand of savour finger eats placed down in front of you at your table, and then proceed to select two teas from a very exotic (and extensive) list of teas (while continuously heading over to the exquisite dessert buffet table to fill up on treats whenever you run short).

For reference, my first pot of tea was the Pu-Erh Royal 2009 red tea, followed by a pot of Lapsang Souzhong smoked black tea. Chantelle on the other hand gave the rather dramatic Jasmine Dragon Phoenix Pearls oolong tea a go.

We had a particularly interesting tea sommelier (which is apparently now a thing) who spent a fair time talking tea with us, plus, given the fact that we were there for our wedding anniversary, we were even treated to a special little Happy Anniversary plating – much appreciated of course.

Sadly though, our romantic outing for two took a strange turn towards the end of the tea service – turning on our phones revealed that Emily’s school had been trying to get hold of us. Thanks to a MAJOR fire that was moving in onto Gordon’s Bay from Sir Lowry’s Pass, schools were being evacuated and basically we needed to abandon everything and get home fast!

Of course, being stuck more than an hour away from home meant that we had to phone up anyone and everyone in order to make a plan that ensured the kids were safe, and after a quick but slightly panicked stroll around the gardens to admire the exquisite Dylan Lewis sculptures out on display, we strapped in for a rather nail biting drive back home  through traffic.

(For reference, we were all safe, but the blaze on the mountain was massive, gutting a few houses and causing much panic and evacuations, before eventually turning back in gale force winds and heading up over the mountain again. Quite a spectacle to see the mountain at the back of our house burning so bright orange for the next couple of evenings! Also, turns out the saying is true – if you live in a fynbos rich area then you are pretty much guaranteed a major fire every ten years or so!)

Anyway, back to the high tea experience – it was actually really enjoyable to have done:

In Summary: Afternoon Tea at the Mount Nelson is an expensive outing to be sure, but definitely one worth doing if you’re looking to treat your partner to something that is special and perhaps just a little bit out of the norm.

A Most Unromantic Wedding Anniversary (2015-11-08) Photo Gallery 15 NOV 2015

So this year marked the sixth year that I’ve been married to Chantelle. This year around though, our anniversary day fell on a Saturday, and this being a weekend where Chantelle was working (and stressed in trying to get things organized for Jessica’s big birthday parties – yes, “parties” and not “party”), there was to be no chance for a proper wedding anniversary celebration this time around.

(Last year we did a lot better mind you).

So last weekend was spent shopping with Jessica and Emily at Somerset Mall (we did buy some roses for Chantelle), stopping at McDonalds (because this is something that Jessica now asks for. We didn’t buy Chantelle a McFlurry though), and joining up with Chantelle for a celebratory (but kid-interrupted) drink at a bustling Bossa Social Cafe and Bar in Somerset West.

Not particularly romantic.

We tried again on Sunday, but again, small kids don’t really make for romantic wedding anniversary celebration locale selection!

So pink milkshake at Mondeor Garden Restaurant it was.

Maybe next year we’ll plan ahead and do it properly! ;)

(Which reminds me. It’s six years later and I just realized that I still haven’t gotten around to posting our wedding photos on my blog. I guess I really ought to get around to doing that sometime. That said, it’s been a year and I still haven’t fixed our front door glass – so I wouldn’t exactly hold my breathe on the photos front then if I were you!)

Wedding Anniversary Lunch at The Stables at Vergelegen (2014-11-07) Photo Gallery 07 NOV 2015

Today, 7/11/2015 marks the sixth year that Chantelle and I have been married to one another. However, seeing as today is a Saturday, Chantelle is working, and I have a slightly sick Emily to worry about, means that other than maybe a nice coffee get together during her split shift, we probably aren’t going to really celebrate this one.

Last year was however a completely different story though.

With life being as busy as what it is, what with our little 2-year old Jessie and all of Chantelle’s baking for the markets, we didn’t exactly celebrate our third year wedding anniversary with much style. (To be fair, we didn’t really get to celebrate the previous anniversary events properly either!)

But what we did do, was have Chantelle completely catch me by surprise, by preparing this awesome dinner which we shared over candlelight and a bottle of champagne – after I arrived home from work and we finished up all the bed time routines with Jess of course!

Which in the end was the perfect little romantic way of celebrating this cool little milestone in our life together.

Happy 35th Wedding Anniversary Mom and Dad! My Life 04 DEC 2011

Wow, 35 years is a life time, so a very, very big congratulations to Mom and Dad who are today celebrating 35 years of being married to one another.

Pleasingly, they haven’t murdered one another yet.

So once again, the best of wishes to the best Mom and Dad any son could ever ask for, and here’s to hoping for many, many more! :)

Our Second Wedding Anniversary My Life 07 NOV 2011

Today marks Chantelle and my second wedding anniversary, certainly something that ought to be celebrated considering just how much we have achieved in our lives over these past two years of wedded bliss – the two biggest being of course the fact that we’ve made, and are in the process of raising, a beautiful, bouncy baby girl, and of course our purchase of a house here in Gordon’s Bay, followed by the subsequent sinking in of countless hours in our attempts of turning it into OUR home, good and proper!

I can’t believe that it has been two years already Love, and honestly, the time is flying by far to quickly and I really do lament the fact that I only get to to spend two full weekends with you in a month, because quite frankly, there is no one else I’d rather be spending each and every hour of my waking day!

So thank you Wifey for making me the happiest husband and father in the world, and I sincerely look forward to the next year when I get to make these same soppy comments all over again! :)

Lots of love, from me to you.

We didn’t exactly celebrate our one year wedding anniversary in style due to certain circumstances, but we did at least manage to nip out for an enjoyable lunch at Mama Roma’s in Stellenbosch.
