Fun and Games at the Winter Wonderland Festival in Gordon’s Bay (2018-07-08) Family Attractions | Photo Gallery 08 JUN 2019

Next week Friday (the 14th of June 2019) the ninth edition of Gordon’s Bay’s very own Winter Wonderland Festival kicks off with its annual evening parade – and this time we even have one of our daughters dancing in it!

Started back in 2010 by the newly launched Gordon’s Bay Business Forum as a way of attracting visitors during the quiet winter months, the festival has gone from strength to strength, morphing from an intimate collection of food trucks on the site of the old Van Riebeek Hotel and lots of fairy lights running through the milkwood trees, to the slickly run, well marketed, sprawling array of tents and fun rides that you find on the carnival weekends today.

Every year the “Carnival Park”, now situated in Hendon Park right on Gordon’s Bay’s beautiful main beach is a blast, with loads of food trucks and food stalls, virtually non-stop live music, beer, arts and crafts, family activities and just plenty of fun. That said, the highlight of the festivities as far as the kids are concerned is always the fun park set up and operated by Funland Amusements SA – their collection of fun rides is always a massive hit for the event!

This year (as it has been for the last couple of years – basically a safeguard against the whole thing being rained out entirely), the festival is spread over two carnival weekends, 14-16 and 21-23 June. And yes, obviously we are going to have just as much fun as what we did last year!

Winter Wonderland Fun Rides in Gordon’s Bay (2017-07-23) Kid Activities | Photo Gallery 08 FEB 2018

The Gordon’s Bay Winter Wonderland Festival of Lights has been on the go for a couple of years now, with each year definitely getting bigger and better. Featuring a parade, dance, fun run, arts and crafts, loads of food stalls, music performances, kids entertainment, and of course a whole lot of fairy lights.

However the star of the show as far as what my girls are concerned is without a doubt the fun park, which is filled with all manner of fun rides (mostly things that spin really fast while lifting up and down) for both young and the not particularly so old crowd.

For the really little ones there are trains, bugs, clowns, puppies and octopuses, all of which Emily made very sure to have a go at.

Jessica on the other hand wanted things a little higher and a little faster, and I suspect in a year or two when she’s a bit bigger, she’ll be twisting my arm for the REALLY expensive rides!

(Sure, the tickets are only R10 a piece, but for the bigger, newer machines you are looking at five or six tickets, i.e. R50-R60, per ride! Emily on the other hand should still be a nice cheap date though…)

We don’t have access to fun rides very often here in Gordon’s Bay, so what was nice last year was the fun park hanging around for a fair bit after the Winter Wonderland festival had passed, giving the girls more than a few opportunities to get some kicks in! (Which is why if you look at the photos, you’ll see the girls wearing different clothes and in different light conditions.)

Right, so I imagine then that we’ll find ourselves back in the queue come July again! :)

Waiting for the Milkwood Tree Lights… My Life 13 JUL 2015

As the official website says: “Gordon’s Bay hosts the spectacular Winter Wonderland Festival of Lights from 19 June to 19 July 2015. The highlight is the Carnival Weekends from 26 – 28 June & 3 – 5 July 2015. Come join us for music, markets and merrymaking!”

As it stands, other than seeing Geon’s magic show on the last day of the last carnival weekend (very entertaining), and strolling through the fairy light lit up milkwood tree walk along the beach at night, we kind of missed it all – even the kids rides.

We did however for a change entertain friends (who joined us for penguins, botanical gardens and then a big braai) and family (pizza evening!), which kind of was more fun anyway! :P

And besides, the kids had a blast regardless:

(My phone’s camera can’t really take pictures at night, hence a complete lack of awesome fairy light photos!)

As you can see, Emily definitely reckons I should get a better camera! :P

Next year we’ll make more of an effort to attend this awesome Gordon’s Bay event. Promise!

A Weekend of Wonder and Mountains My Life 03 JUL 2013

Last weekend was particularly awesome mind you. It kicked off with a trip after work to the big Carnival Weekend, the showpiece segment of the Gordon’s Bay month long Winter Wonderland festival, and I have to admit, I was pretty impressed with what I saw. (Even Jessica approved, what with her dancing to each and every live bit of live music she got exposed to!)

Because little toddlers aren’t known for staying awake very late, we eventually returned home and with Jess in bed, we set about watching the absurd but enjoyable British black comedy Keeping Mum, with me even sneaking in some WordPress development for the heck of it.

Saturday was an early start for Jess and me, as I drove the two of us through to Bellville in order to deliver Jess to Monty and Cheryl, who had asked to take her with them on a one night stay in Jacobsbaai. With that delivery handled, I then headed off to Ryan’s place, where after a quick bit of FIFA, we hopped into his Polo and rode off to Constantia Nek, meeting up with Karl-Heinz, Trish and one of their friends for an epic 2.5 hour expedition up Table Mountain via the jeep track, a picnic in the shadow of the dams our end goal. As it turned out, the weather was fantastic for the trip, and all in all everyone enjoyed quite an entertaining five hour long outing on the mountain!

Back in Bellville, I quickly popped in to pick something up from Mom’s place, before hitting the road again to head home, grab a shower, and then join Chantelle for a movie date night, catching the well made (but not quite for me) Spud 2: The Madness Continues, followed by a relaxing and tasty supper at Panarottis in the mall. From there we braved the cold and headed off once again to the Winter Wonderland festival, where we were entertained by the live music while enjoying some rather delicious pancakes! (In fact, we had pancakes each and every time we ended up at the main tent over the weekend…)

Sunday morning meant a bit of a sleep in for me, but that didn’t last forever as we eventually headed out in order to drop off the Andy’s sister’s birthday cake Chantelle had made during the course of Saturday at Gordon’s Beach Lodge, after which we then took the scenic route through to Betty’s Bay, where we enjoyed a good breakfast at Jack’s Cafe, the first time we had ever been to that particular establishment.

Following our delicious breakfast, we decided to pop in to Koggelbaai, heading down towards the beach and marveling at all the surfers catching waves and showing off their skills, not to mention the gorgeous scenic views of the surrounding area.

Now I know why Koggelbaai is always such a hit with surfers and tourists alike! (Plus, the playful young baboons causing havoc were an added treat I might add).

Back in Gordon’s Bay we once again popped in to the Winter Wonderland festival, strolled around a bit, caught a piece of a Lukas Maree tribute band, before heading home where Chantelle caught a bit of an afternoon nap, while I was tasked with doing a spot of shopping.

Late afternoon saw the two of us drive through to Bellville in order to pick up Jessica who had enjoyed an entertaining stay with Oupa and Ouma in Jacobsbaai, not to mention tuck into the delicious snoek that Robert eventually prepared on the braai for us!

So yeah, a pretty awesome weekend was had by all.

(Though I’m not going to mention just how stiff and in pain I was for the two days following the Table Mountain expedition mind you!)

This weekend was the big Carnival Weekend for the Gordon’s Bay Winter Wonderland tourist attraction, and we ended up there each and every day of this past weekend! These photos were snapped on Sunday morning, as everything slowly started to wind down again.
