Whenever I fire up Excel 2007, I get greeted with an annoying error message that reads “Compile error in hidden module: DistMon” but doesn’t actually seem to affect the application in any way once cleared.
I did a quick search on Microsoft and came up with the following article which explains the problem away.
It turns out that if you are receiving this error message then it may be one of two things at fault. One, either the Microsoft Office Startup folder or the Microsoft Excel Startup folder contains either or both of the following Adobe Acrobat PDFMaker add-in template files: Pdfmaker.dot or Pdfmaker.xla, or two, Norton AntiVirus software is installed.
Now if Norton AntiVirus is causing the problem then there isn’t much that you can do other than download the latest updates and check up on their website, but if it is the Adobe PDFMaker add-in that is the culprit, solving this problem is quite a simple matter.
First, go and investigate either the Office startup folder at C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12STARTUP or the Excel startup folder at C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12XLSTART and locate either the Pdfmaker.dot or Pdfmaker.xla files that may be hiding there (try showing hidden files and folders if you can’t see them straight away).
Once located, simply move the files to a different location, like My Documents for instance.
And there you have it, no more annoying error message every time you start up Excel :)
