I recently purchased a Proline Smart AK888-13 9.7″ Dual-Core Tablet from Loot.co.za for the low price of R2,099, featuring a 1.6GHz Cortex A9 Dual-Core CPU, a 10 point multi-touch capacitive screen with a resolution of 1024×768 (4:3), 1GB memory backed up by a 16GB NAND memory capacity, and running the fantastic Android 4.1 Jellybean OS. No 3G but obviously Wi-Fi and BlueTooth capable.

In other words, not a high-spec tablet like your Apple iPad or your Samsung Galaxy Tab, but a very serviceable, extremely well priced, Chinese manufactured (Proline simple imports and brands them) mid-range tablet with a nice solid and fashionable design, good handling and the surprising ability to play 3D games rather well.

So with the wonderous Google Play store at my finger tips, this is part 2 of the list of games I find myself currently playing (and enjoying) on my new entertainment device: (You can find Part 1 of the list here).

Note that all of these follow the so-called ‘Free-mium’ model, i.e. they are free to download and play, but do feature advertising and do offer additional in-app purchases that allow you to progress through the game faster or gain access to better equipment or abilities. You get what you pay for in the end…

Angry Birds Star Wars (2013): By now pretty much everyone on the planet has been exposed to the addictive and enjoyable casual gaming experience that is Angry Birds, basically a game that allows you to catapult different types of birds (each with their own special abilities) at some nasty pigs and the structures that they inhabit. Well Angry Birds Star Wars is the next evolution of the title and marries the gameplay of the first game and the follow up Angry Birds Space into one, heavily Star Wars referenced game. To be honest, unless you’re a Star Wars fan then you’re not really going to enjoy this one, as a lot of the charm is lost in space, and I must admit, the Jedi powered and laser pistol equipped birds seemed to reduce the difficulty of the game, meaning that I didn’t quite get as much enjoyment out of it like I got out of the first.

Candy Crush Saga (2012): In the same vein as Bejeweled and the countless variants before and after that, Candy Crush Saga is a surprisingly enjoyable and addictive puzzle game that sees you switching and matching board after board of brightly coloured candies, trying desperately to unlock the powers of a long string match in the hopes of beating whatever winning condition needs to be met before your allotted moves run out. Very addictive and I found myself particularly enjoying this one!

Frontline Commando: D-Day (2013): Frontline Commando is an impressive third person shooter that is set in World War II and sees you controlling a commando taking on the D-Day battle of Normandy, making the beach landing, clearing the trenches and ultimately taking the fight right up to the Axis soldiers. The 3D graphics and sound are fantastic if you consider that this is a mobile game, and this third person shooter makes for a very enjoyable break from the more simpler games currently populating the mobile gaming world.

Dragon Slayer (2013): Dragon Slayer is another polished hit from the excellent mobile game producer Glu Mobile, and this around you are tasked with travelling around a fantasy world and slaying troublesome, mountainous dragons, reptiles and wyverns! Basically the game is made up of a series of battles, where your character model faces off against a fearsome creature and you have to dodge and time your attacks, learning the beast’s unique attack pattern in order to defeat it before your health bar can run out. Gorgeous 3D graphics and action-packed gameplay makes this quite the enjoyable action title to pick up!
