If you are a Capetonian and you’re on Instagram or Pinterest, then no doubt you’ve come across Adene’s Farm Flowers in one form or the other before. From their working flower farm out in the farmlands of Wolseley, Adene and her team produce an incredible array of exotic flowers used to supply weddings, events, florists and of course to brighten up the homes of you and I, whether ordered from them directly or collected from their jaw dropping displays at the weekly weekend Oranjezicht City Farm Market.
A former fashion buyer and wedding photographer, Adene Nieuwoudt fired up her working flower farm in 2016, establishing it on the Platvlei Fruit Farm situated in Wolseley, which itself lies in the Breede River Valley region, meaning relatively mild winters and long hot summers and thus the ability to grow an incredibly wide range of sought after flowers.
Known in particular for their incredible anemones and amazing dahlias, the farm also hosts open day weekends, throwing open the farm to the public for visits from mid December to early April. Naturally, after getting a whiff of this, Chantelle immediately roped us and her parents into joining her for a day trip out to Wolseley (the farm is about 130 km away from us), where we were all set to traipse about 5 hectares supporting 50 000 flowering dahlias, 4 000 hydrangeas, and of course a ton more interesting flowers in bloom!
As you can see from the pictures below, the stunning flowers really are both a colourful and fragrant treat for the senses and as it just so happens to be, if any do catch your eye, then you can buy them right then and there – which is exactly what Chantelle ended up doing!
There’s also a little coffee shop setup that lets you grab some refreshments and catch your breath under some big shady trees, and all in all, the visit was exactly what Chantelle hoped it would be, and indeed, I think we all came back with a renewed appreciation of just how beautiful flowers can be. An easy activity to recommend if you don’t mind the drive out to the countryside.
