Tasked with entertaining my visiting Egyptian Turkey-based colleague Abdelrahman Khedr for the day, the girls and I picked him up from his Airbnb in Sea Point and proceeded to spend the afternoon being tourists in Hout Bay, with a boat ride out to Seal Island followed by a visit with the World of Birds’ feathered friends. Of course, all this needed to be broken up with a quick lunch in between, and seeing as we were keeping this nice and informal, I introduced Abdo to snoek via a visit to Snoekies, a fish and chips shop that has been operating from the harbour since 1951!

A classic South African fish and chips shop, Snoekies has everything you would expect from one of these places of oily deep fried delight, and indeed, the fish, calamari and slap chips went down a right treat. Pleasingly the snoek was a winner with our visitor and as such for the group, well bellies full, smiles on the faces, and thus a win for the day!

Hout Bay purists would of course argue that I should instead have taken him to the more famous Fish on the Rocks or maybe someplace in the market just a stone’s throw away from Snoekies, but honestly, this was a Saturday and out of all of the available options around the harbour, Snoekies had a little more space and a little more parking, making it the easiest choice on the day.
