The delightful little town of Montagu along South Africa’s Route 62 has become a bit of a getaway location for us and last year saw us once again load up the boot and spend a few days hanging out at the tranquil middle of nowhere Badensfontein farm cottages. It was during this stay that we finally got the opportunity to sit down for a cup of coffee at the lovely The Barn on 62 eatery and accommodation hub, situated right on the edge of the town.

The eatery is housed in an old converted barn, maintaining much of its rustic appeal to complement the rest of the building. The whitewashed walls conceal a lush courtyard and green garden, making for an equally tranquil outdoor or indoor gathering spot. The food on the menu is local, light and fresh, the coffee is good, and on this particular visit we got to pair it with some particularly delicious (though unusually shaped) scones.

It’s on the main route through Montagu and well worth a pop in if you ever find yourself in the area.

Also, the kids didn’t really want to leave once they had discovered the swings out back.
