Music, Fish, and Chips at the Vis Vlekhuis in Laaiplek (2018-03-31) Food and Drink | Photo Gallery 25 JUN 2018

Chantelle, the girls and I joined her folks for a weekend up the West Coast back in March of this year, spending much of our time relaxing in the tranquil atmosphere of Jacobsbaai. Monty however very much wanted to show off a local fish and chips stop that they had only recently discovered, which explains then why we found ourselves winding through the small town of Velddrif and ending up in the even smaller town of Laaiplek on a rather warm and sunny Saturday afternoon.

Now we weren’t visiting the historically significant port of Laaiplek (so named because it was the loading area for ships from Europe from where goods were then transported into the hinterland) or its adjacent sister Velddrif for their famed bokkoms or view over the Berg River, instead we were on a mission and heading straight to Die Vis Vlekhuis, a popular bar and fish and chips takeaways situated just off the main harbour of the area.

And I’m not joking about its popularity mind you. The venue was packed both inside and out (shame, their neighbours could truthfully have done with some of Vis Vlekhuis’ patrons), and the queue for food was quite the sight. (In other words, the wait time for fish and chips was a bit on the lengthy side).

Nevertheless, we got lucky in that Monty managed to secure an outdoor table, allowing us to then grab some beers, let the girls entertain themselves by colouring in (they brought their own supplies), and enjoy the live music courtesy of the rather talented and very entertaining Jay Jay who was belting out all the hits from next door in the bar area.

The food did of course eventually arrive, and I have to say, the fish and chips were well worth the wait. Generous portions, good flavour – nothing to complain about at all! Hungers were sated, seagulls were fed, and a lazy walk to look at the boats was taken.

(Oh, and a rather pleasant drive down through Bokkom Avenue along the river completed the trip.)

So, all in all a successful first visit to this small but charming in its West Coast way place then.

Extra Credit: The team behind the Afrikaans travel magazine Weg put together this short video about fish, pelicans, bakkies and bokkoms in Velddrif. Obviously you’ll need to know some Afrikaans to follow what’s going on, though that said, even if you do have a decent understanding, that distinctive West Coast accent isn’t going to make things any easier for you to follow…

In all honesty, now that I think about it, I don’t believe that I have ever tasted bokkoms. Guess I’ll have to rectify that come our next visit up the West Coast then!

Things to See in South Africa: The Sunland Baobab in Modjadjiskloof Travel Attractions 20 AUG 2016

Baobab trees are renowned for their longevity and ability to reach massive proportions, with one of the largest in South Africa being the Sunland Baobab – made even more famous when in 1993, the owners of the farm on which the tree stands installed a bar in the hollow middle of the tree!

Thus was born the world famous Baobab Tree Bar.

Situated near Modjadjiskloof (Duiwelskloof) in Limpopo Province, the Sunland Baobab grows on the Sunland mango farm. The tree has been carbon dated and its age is estimated to be around 1700 years old. The tree has a diameter of 10.64 meters, is 19 metres high, with a crown diameter of 30.2 metres. The circumference of the trunk is 33.4 metres.

When baobabs become a thousand years old, they begin to hollow inside, forming natural wooden caverns.  Doug and Heather van Heerden bought Sunland farm in 1989, and in 1993 decided to clear out compost from the central trunk, squared off a hole to make way for a door and finally installed a railway sleeper inside for the bar.

This being South Africa, that turned the Sunland Baobab into an instant tourist attraction!

Also on Sunland farm is a nursery specialising in palms and bamboo, as well as a mango and avocado plantation. The farm can also provide accommodation for up to 20 people in tent huts which have been dubbed ‘jungalows’.

Baobab trees have many myths and legends surrounding them, with one of the most well known ones being the story as to why it is sometimes called the upside down tree. Local legend has it that the baobab tree offended God and as punishment, God planted the tree upside down – easy to understand if you see a baobab in winter with its bare branches pointing skywards!

The Limpopo province is also home to the two other famous South African Baobab specimens, the country’s stoutest and second largest baobab known as the Glencoe Baobab in Hoedspruit, and the largest baobab tree in South Africa, the Sagole Baobab near Tshipise.

Recommended in Strand: Eating at Chick & Chic Food and Drink 05 MAR 2016

Towards the end of last year Chantelle and I discovered this awesome hidden little resaurant (and bar) tucked away just off Beach Road in Strand. Belgian-influenced Chick & Chic is known for its chicken prepared on its rotisserie-grill, though to be honest, everything else on the menu is just as good – in terms of freshness, presentation and that all important metric of flavour!

They have a mixture of seating available, the indoor section tucked away in an interesting old house complete with historical artwork and prints which really makes for some good convesation-driven dining.

My favourite however is the outside garden eating area, which is fresh, tranquil, and completely sheltered from Strand’s infamous winds! There is again, an interesting, historically outfitted bar lurking off to your side (in the house’s old barn), while a small kiddies jungle gym is tucked away in a back corner, meaning that this venue can then cater for both old and young alike.

Definitely a hidden gem (seriously, blink and you will walk past it!) when it comes to dining out in the Helderberg basin!

Joke Factory: Scotland Wales Jokes & other Funny Stuff 28 MAR 2013

Last night I was having some wings and beer with a co-worker after work. There were these two pretty, but kinda large girls drinking at the bar and being rather loud. They had what I could have sworn was a Scottish accent.

Seeing as I’m a big fan of girls from the UK, I ambled over to strike up a conversation. I asked them, “So… are you two ladies from Scotland then?”

I could see immediately that I had offended them. The brunette scowled and retorted, “WALES!”

I humbly apologized and replied, “I’m sorry. Are you two whales from Scotland then?”

Joke Factory: The Blind Cowboy versus the Blondes Jokes & other Funny Stuff 19 AUG 2011

An elderly, blind cowboy wanders into an all-girl biker bar by mistake.

Finding his way to a barstool, he sits down and orders a beer. A couple of minutes later, he yells out to the bartender, “Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?”

The bar immediately falls absolutely silent.

In a deep, husky voice, the woman next to the old cowboy turns and says to him, “Before you tell that joke cowboy, I think it is only fair, given that you are blind, that you should know five things.”

“First, the bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat. Two, the bouncer is a blonde girl. Three, the lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler. Four, the lady sitting next to me is blonde and happens to be a professional weightlifter. Lastly, I am 6-foot tall, weigh 175 pounds, have a black belt in karate, and am also blonde.”

“In other words, I suggest you think carefully as to whether or not you still want to tell your little blonde joke.”

The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head, and mutters, “No…not if I’m gonna have to explain it five times.”

Joke Factory: Wash Your Hands Real Good Jokes & other Funny Stuff 01 JUL 2011

An elderly golfer comes in after a good round of golf at the new course and heads straight to the bar/restaurant area of the club house.

As he passes through the swinging doors, he spots a sign hanging over the bar that reads:

COLD BEER: R15.00
HAMBURGER: R20.00
CHEESEBURGER: R25.50
CHICKEN SANDWICH : R18.50
HAND JOB: R250.00

Checking his wallet to be sure he has the necessary money, the old golfer walks up to the bar and beckons to the exceptionally attractive female bartender who is serving drinks to a couple of sun-wrinkled golfers.

She glides down behind the bar to the old golfer.

“Yes?” she inquires with a wide, knowing smile. “May I help you Sir?”

The old golfer leans over the bar and whispers, “I was wondering young lady, are you the one who gives the hand-jobs around here?”

She looks into his wrinkled eyes and with a wide smile purrs, “Yes Sir, I sure am.”

The old golfer leans in even closer and into her left ear says softly, “Well then, be sure to really, really wash your hands real good, because I want a cheeseburger.”

Review: Bartender (2006) Anime | My Reviews 10 FEB 2011

Incredibly boring and pointless. 13 episodes long, firmly in the drama and slice of life genre, Bartender tells the story of a… bar, a bartender and the patrons that find their way to him to relate their sob story so that he can fix a drink to make them feel better. Lots of work done by a narrator, lots of loving given to drinks (complete with ingredient menus) and really of absolutely no interest to anyone, even if you do enjoy quality drink or have time on your hands.

Animation is actually pretty good though, even if the show splices a lot of live-action photo work (mostly of bottle labels) and small CG strolls (like running down the length of a wooden bar top) into the episodes. Likewise, the voice actors are well matched to the characters and the lounge-style background, opening and closing tracks all suit the show pretty well.

Summary. I really couldn’t bring myself to watch more than an episode or two of this very drawn out, over-dramatic and slightly pointless (and boring) show.
