Pizza, Dogs, and a Goat at JANKAN in Paarl (2021-03-13) Farm Stalls | Photo Gallery 01 APR 2021

After a day of clambering about the mountain and stroking the alpacas in Paarl, the girls were now rightfully a little more than just peckish, and so off I set in search of something nice and family friendly in order to satisfy their combined mewling. As it just so happens, the Picardie Guest Farm, situated right near the start of the old town, has the most wonderful of farm stall coffee shops inhabiting their grounds – the über family friendly JANKAN experience.

It’s not a lot to look at, sure, but the metal sheet building houses an incredible array of fresh produce and other knickknacks ready for purchase, as well as the all important bits of a small kitchen and of course pizza oven! Stepping through the tin shack, you enter a paved courtyard area that has a number of tables shaded by a large stretch tent, and sprawling beyond that, a grassy play area that is filled with jumping castles, jungle gyms, and just a ton of other things for small children to clamber about on. Even further to the back is a small paddock where kids can enjoy a horse ride or two (in fact, this is something that Jessica did many moons ago when we first visited this space), and of course, littered throughout is a huge assortment of small farm animals, from bunny rabbits to pigs, and even a free roaming goat.

And then of course there are the farm dogs walking around, Great Danes included! In other words, it is no wonder then that JANKAN is a firm favourite for local kids birthday party celebrations. As for our little visit, we found a small table, I ordered a beer and some pizza plus roosterkoek to share, and off the girls scuttled for some play time, appearing only now and then whenever food or drink arrived at our table!

Pancake Pitstop at Oppi Plaas Farm Stall in Albertinia (2019-09-30) Farm Stalls | Photo Gallery 27 OCT 2019

Half way between Albertinia and Riversdale, directly on the N2 route, is a hard to miss – thanks to all the rigid flags and energy-drink sponsored advertising boards pointing to it – farm stall which touts its Jakkelsvlei link and almost always looks slightly deserted. I’ve had my eye on it for quite a while now, but this last school holiday finally saw me pull over and pay a visit to the surprisingly charming Oppi Plaas Padstal.

The farm stall does everything a N2 farm stall is supposed to do. Inside is a nice collection of home bakes, bric-a-brac, and other small handmade home decor items, as well as a nice selection of snacks ready for the drive home. Plus, it also stocks a good selection of Jakkalsvlei wines, which is great news if you weren’t quite able to make a drive out towards Herbertsdale over the course of your weekend away!

Oppi Plaas has the required quirky, colourful exterior (full of sculptures and other eye-catching whatnots), and pleasingly also offers a small menu of light meal and drink options should your party have a few holes in the stomach in need of filling.

Case in point, the girls weren’t letting me out of there until they had their fill of pancakes!

Pit stop at Die Rooi Aalwyn Farm Stall and Coffee Shop in Riversdale (2016-12-30) Farm Stalls | Photo Gallery 17 MAY 2017

Back in December last year, Jessica, Emily and I hit the road for a bit of quick, end of year holiday, taking the N2 and heading all the way up to Gouritz, where we were to spend the next couple of days with oupa and ouma Monty and Cheryl.

Of course small children and long drives aren’t a fantastic mix, so I did my best to make the trip as enjoyable as possible, with stops every so often for a spot of leg stretching (and yes, sometimes a bite to eat!).

Situated just outside of Riversdale and part of a small outdoor shopping center that is famously home of the original Bali Trading decor and gifts shop, is Die Rooi Aalwyn Padstal (in English, the Red Aloe Farm Stall),  a small coffee, home industry and restaurant  establishment that is super welcoming and seemingly ALWAYS busy!

That said, before we could actually browse through any of their tasty looking stuff, the girls first had to take their time browsing through the local toy shop Caboodels, followed by some play time on the lush green lawn and big jungle gym, before finally wrapping things up with some time clambering about the old tractors out on display.

(In other words, yes, this is a pretty good pit stop option if you have small kids).

Anyway, to cut a short story even shorter, legs stretched, soft serve ice cream in our bellies, and a bag full of tasty treats from the farm stall in our hands, it was back on the road to tackle the last remaining stretch of our little holiday drive!

Whilst on the Garden Route Knysna leg of our honeymoon road trip, we made an effort to stop at the Thyme & Again padstal (farm stall) to enjoy some of their freshly made food on recommendation of the Montgomery Clan, before making a stop and enjoying a tranquil amble through one of the many fern-heavy forests accessible to tourists in the area.
