Things to See in Russia: The Motherland Calls Giant Statue Travel Attractions 22 JAN 2015

The Motherland Calls, or The Mamayev Monument, is a statue in Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd, Russia, commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad. It was designed by sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and structural engineer Nikolai Nikitin, and declared the largest statue in the world in 1967.

Compared with the later higher statues, The Motherland Calls is significantly more complex from an engineering point of view, due to its characteristic posture with a sword raised high in the right hand and the left hand extended in a calling gesture. The technology behind the statue is based on a combination of pre-stressed concrete (7,900 tonnes) with wire ropes structure, a solution which can be found also in another work of Nikitin’s, the super-tall Ostankino Tower in Moscow.

It is the tallest statue of a woman in the world.

When the memorial was dedicated in 1967 it was the tallest sculpture in the world, measuring 87 metres from the tip of its sword to the top of the plinth. The figure itself measures 52 metres, and the sword 33 metres.

Two hundred steps, symbolizing the 200 days of the Battle of Stalingrad, led from the bottom of the hill to the monument. The statue appears on both the current flag and coat of arms of Volgograd Oblast.

My Rating… Conan the Barbarian (2011) Live-Action | My Reviews 31 AUG 2011

My rating: 6 out of 10 stars.

Conan the Barbarian is your standard gory sword and sorcery epic which is actually VERY well executed and as a whole, a thoroughly polished production, featuring great visuals, great acting, great sound track, and loads of fantastic sword swinging action to enjoy. And make no mistake, Jason Momoa fits the character like a glove.

However, even with all that going for it, Conan the Barbarian feels tedious and drawn out, and it is almost like it saps the energy out of you by the time you are finished with it. The problem is that Conan is a very one-dimensional character in this movie, and as such one simply doesn’t manage to connect with him (or anyone else for that matter) and in the end simply couldn’t care less as to what happens, a death knell for any movie to be honest.

It shouldn’t be boring and yet it is, and I’m really not all that sure as to why. A pity really, considering the great choreography of the relentless fight scenes the movie keeps throwing at you.

Oh, and don’t bother watching it in 3D. Not worth the extra money, because seriously, nothing amazing is ever done with the technology.

Strictly for action fans then.
