Chantelle’s Cookies and Cakes Expands Again! (Bye Bye Braai Room!) My Life 22 MAR 2013

Remember back in December when I purchased a big 450 litre KIC chest freezer for Chantelle’s business? Well the great news is that her business is doing so well that I felt the need to invest in it again. The bad news is of course that my braai room is now pretty much been overrun and taken away from me!

(Hell, even my XBOX and 40 inch Telefunken TV is now living in my study!)

Two large appliances were delivered during the week, both bought from Somerset West Tafelberg Meubels, the first being yet another big KIC chest freezer, and the second being a standalone Perfekt fridge!

It was a bit of fun and games with the fridge though – I opened up the packaging just after the delivery boys had left, only to discover that they had sent through a standalone freezer instead of the standalone fridge that I had wanted. Annoyed I checked my invoice and then recoiled in horror when I saw the clerk had made an error and rung up the freezer instead of the fridge (they’re the same price), with me completely missing it in the process!

Luckily for me the clerk turned out to be a trainee so Tafelberg had no issue in changing the order for me, and by the end of the same day the delivery boys were back again, picking up the hastily repackaged freezer (thanks for the assist Chantelle!) and dropping off our nifty little fridge.

Right, so now it is only that R10,000 massive thermofan oven we have our eye on plus the R3,000 Kenwood mixer still left on our ambitious capacity expansion plan! :)

Jessica’s First Bed (and a Chest Freezer) My Life 05 JAN 2013

So I made two last big purchases here at the death of my Christmas vacation period, the first being a humongous KIC 438 litre chest freezer for Chantelle’s booming Cookies & Cakes business (though I could probably fit a whole springbok in there with relative ease), for R3,600 from Tafelberg Furnishers here in Somerset West, following up on a lead that Monty picked up for us the previous day. We were in the shop 9:00 yesterday morning, and by 13:00 our brand new chest freezer was standing proudly in what was formerly my braai room, now Chantelle’s baking supplies pantry.

However, as exciting as this chest freezer and the possibilities it brings with it is, it didn’t beat the pure joy my other big purchase brought to the house (which was also delivered yesterday afternoon as luck would have it) – Jessica’s very first bed, a beautiful white single bed from Pine City (R1,200) and a decent mattress from the always helpful Bed City (R800). Of course we made sure to properly kit it out, the result being a beautiful little girl’s bed that had Jessica diving on top of it out of pure happiness (and naturally with a lot of chants of “myne, myne, myne”).

And as you can see from the pictures below, it would seem to get the thumbs up from Mommy too!

Of course, all these new purchases meant a huge reshuffle of the house, which basically had me on my feet working from morning to night, shifting things around as sorting out various DIY and tidying up tasks.

Needless to say, I was rather overjoyed when at 21:30 Chantelle served up our supper of Southern Fried Chicken Strips, vegging out for the next while on the couch with some Big Bang Theory for company.

(It’s useful to also note that the previous evening I helped Chantelle out on her apron-themed kitchen tea cake order for Claire, creating and cutting out numerous little fondant shapes, things like kitchen utensils, lingerie, and of course plenty of dickerdoodles. Didn’t turn out too badly but I am now pretty sure that I don’t particularly want to be doing cakes for a living!).

Right. Now to try and do something relaxing (and less expensive) for the last two days of my holiday! :)

And there Goes the Stove My Life 28 OCT 2011

Aargh, so frustrating! Finally after a year of building back up from the money lows reached during Chantelle’s unpaid maternity leave, finally when I have enough spare cash to splash out on either a dishwasher or a television for the braai room, the bloody stove goes and acts up again!

Our little Defy 600 STS Ther@fan and us certainly haven’t enjoyed a very harmonious 1st year together, and after spending more than enough money on it to keep it running over the period (well, to be fair, I think it was only twice), this latest little game it is playing with us by screwing with its dials is the final straw that broke this camel’s back!

So on Gumtree an advert has gone, and pleasingly enough we have already had some interest, so hopefully out it goes – I need the convenience of an always working oven, not one I have to keep hoping will work when I need it! :)

Anyway, Chantelle and I have already done a bit of shopping about for a replacement, and after much deliberation, it would seem that we’ve settled on a very nice little unit from Whirlpool, from Tafelberg Meubels for around R3,500 – could have gone for a cheaper KIC model, but we both decided that in the end, a therma fan oven is more useful than an oven without one of these heat spreading devices.

And besides, the little money we hope to make off the Defy should bring this down to under R3,000.

Of course, this also means a new hob as these units go hand in hand, but at least we get to keep the existing extractor fan… and our kitchen gets a shiny new look!

Still, I really, really could have done with that TV or dishwasher you know…
